Joeh
I am a long time pipe and cigar smoker, who recently purchased my first hookah. I have jumped right in so far, and have enjoyed myself. The only pipe issues I have been having (slightly hot smoke, messy bowl) I think will be alleviated by the purchase of a phunnel. The big question that I have, with my smoking background I tend to prefer full bodied, earthy, strong tobaccos, and while I don't dislike the fruit/sweet flavors in the majority of shisha blends I have smoked, I would prefer something slightly less sweet. Further, I do like the mentholated feel of some of the blends that I have smoked in various lounges, but have not seemed to be able to reproduce it.Any information on what brands may be prefered for a stronger, full bodied smoke, as well as wat tobbaccos lend themselves to mentholation, and the proper blending techniques for achieving the mix, would be greatly appricited. sss8789
buy tangiers and learn how to pack it, tangiers has many earthy flavors like kashmir, horchata, and cocoa. It is higher in nicotine than most brands and has some really good flavors that are not that sweet (I don't like very sweet), you would need a funnel or most would recommend one for tangier, so check out their flavors on hookah-shisha.com or mnhookah.com, or hookahcompany.com, I think they will have some flavors you will like and you can also look at the reviews of some flavors in the review section. sss8789
and for the menthol feel most mint shihas usually do that but if it doesn't add some Halls cough drops, with vapor action, to the base. Edited August 28, 2008 by sss8789
Lysolz
Someone ought to send this fella some Jewels(Kamal). As far as 'earthy' goes, I found the King Moassel(sp?) Fruitopia to smell and taste VERY earthy - almost dirtlike, but in a delicious kind of way (I know, sounds odd...)You might want to try Romman, too. Very good smoke quality, but from my experience has very, very subtle flavors.

pboyle
One of my favorite flavors, if not my favorite overall, would be Tangiers Kashmir Peach. The kashmir adds a nice spicy flavor to a subtle peachy-ness.That or Tangiers Green Apple

Giant Ninja Robot
Lesse there's Al Fakher Cardamom, rose, caffe latte, vanilla, plum (sightly sour), mint, and jasmine, pipe, and the elusive cigar that I've only seen on their master website.Tangiers horchata, cocoa, clove, kashmir, red tea, indigo flower, marigold, and I'm sure more than that.also maybe try a traditional hookah tobacco like zaghloul and pretty much any liquirice flavor.I'm a big fan of non-fruit flavs too so good luck there are alot out there just not as many as the fruity ones (which I love too).Welcom to hookah! When you hit the stage in which you've perfected bowl packing and are getting smooth smoke with monster clouds you'll be totally hooked man, I was first a cigar and pipe smoker as well and now I mostly smoke hookah. cigarron
Also a long term pipe and cigar smoker. Nakhla is what you want for that transdermel hit you crave. Stuie's recommendations are right on. As and addition, for that menthol/mint taste, try the excellent Chocomint. Enjoy!

Joeh
Everyone, thanks for all the help, I appreciate it all.One further question, I have heard about cutting various shisha blends with non tobacco products (wines, etc.), but I was wondering at the feasibility of cutting it with loose tobacco. Specifically, in the world of pipe tobaccos I cam across a Parique that could lay me (or for that matter anyone I knew) on their butt in a 1/4 -1/2 bowl (the brand was Amazon), as well as having that lovely smoothe parique flavor. How well, if at all, does cutting the blends work?
