About To Take The Plunge Into Hookah Ownership...

The Mya QT is awesome!

As far as coals go, it depends on where you will be smoking majority of the time. I typically use the silver japs, but when i'm out and about i use the quick starts (i personally can't stand the smell though, so i try not to use them, I'm even considering getting a hot plate for my bag).

Definitely get a nammour hose too!

My personal expirence, I went cheap ebay pumpkin hookah. No thrills, no bells and whistles, cheap and easy. I smoked it for a few weeks and decided that it was for me and went for the upgrades. I figure if I am going to learn and run the risk of screwing up a hookah I wanted it be something that I would not cry over. I have now moved up to a mya wanna be that I found at a dollar store that works for now. I have a Mya on my Christmas list for sure!

Thanks for all the quick responses everyone!

ljlynn: I've heard nothing but positive reviews of the QT, which is why I'm drawn to it. I'll probably be smoking at my apartment most of the time, and I have a gas stove (don't know if that makes a difference for lighting the coals, I've only seen people use electrics for lighting non-quickstart coals). It would be nice to bring the show on the road, so to speak, when someone has a party and we want to smoke, so I guess quickstart is the choice for me. Would the nammor really be needed with these smaller hookahs? Or is it overkill?

zymerholic: How sturdy is the Magdy? Can you expand it to multiple hoses? I like it because its bigger than the other ones I'm looking at, and its nice to know you've had a positive experience.

midnightmead: My only reservation about the pumpkin is that people have said it can be a pain in the ass to get set up properly and get a good smoke out of it. I think I'd rather spend a little extra and have a good experience off the start, than to have a bad experience and give up on the whole thing. If that makes any sense. biggrin.gif

I did not have any issues having never had any experience with a hookah. The only problem I had was the seal around the vase was very tight and it took learning how to press in the stem. Hookah King makes a cheap knock off of the QT that I got. It might as well be a mya from what I have seen. Sets up easy and smokes nice. It is no Mya for sure but for half as much I would say good to learn on. All stainless with a nice thick base, and I LOVE the screw on base feature so you are not pressing in the stem (as in having the issues I had with the pumpkin). My only complaint was that the bowl they sold with it was very shallow and small. I use the bowl I got with my pumpkin on it. To be honest I paid about the same in person for the knock off that I did on ebay for the pumpkin. Good luck with what ever you choose, I am sure you will enjoy it!

If you are on a budget get the cheapest hookah you can stand and spend the rest on a namour. I have noticed on mine that because of how short it is i sometimes can taste water. Granted that means I filled it up too full, but better safe than sorry. You don't want to get stuck with a rusted hose when you are craving some hookah. I love the length of the handle, it makes it easy to pass around and the thickness of the hose almost seems to make it balance better if that makes any sense. I also have a generic 32" egyptian from HS which I primarily use so I like the confidence I get knowing that it's a little more sturdy.

I'm sure I'll take some grief for it, but to me coals are coals, they are just a means to an end, especially if you are just starting out.

When you get a little more cash, pick up a phunnel and scali mod from mnhookah, you will thank yourself.

Mya is the most ideal for Bars and Lounges, but many others go with no-name egyptians that preform just as well.

Middle Eastern restaurants tend to carry Egyptian hookahs mostly for the tradition part..the more modern lounges will mostly use Myas [especially Acrylics]

So for a personal setup, what would you recommend (since you seem to be a legend in these parts)? I'm leaning towards a two-hose QT setup, since most of the time when I smoke there are others who want to partake.

Thanks for all the responses everyone. This place seems awesome.

go with the MZ package for a bunch of reasons
1.awesome bang for your buck
2.its traditional
3.they hit and purge almost as good as a KM
4.its traditional
5.the hose even though its not the best is far better than a mya hose
6.its not a mya
7.its traditional

gothookahs is a great vendor and so are MNH and NazarHookah

What's wrong with Mya?

nothing at all. i can tell you from experience that mya makes some mighty fine hookahs.

the only thing you should look out for is that the newer bases are made of thinner glass (the ones made in romania).
but the paragon, collossus and several other models still have a base made of thick glass.

Go QT and if you enjoy it then go KM.

What he said.

I have a Mya QT and I just got a KM. I haven't smoked the KM yet, but the only reason I got a bigger hookah is because I wanted a bigger hookah smile.gif. The flip side is if I want to take a hookah anywhere, you bet the QT is whats coming. I can't see stuffing at 3 foot peice of metal in a bag someplace with a 5 pound hunk of glass.

Honestly I don't have any complaints about my QT. Perhaps it is because I haven't smoked the KM yet so I don't know what I'm missing. I did do the cheap $15 pumpkin hookah and yes, that one sucks.

The ONLY complaint I have about the QT (ok so I thought of one) is that the ash tray is kind of lame and if you put a coal on it you melt the edges of the bowl grommet some, which isn't a huge issue.

As for the coals, I tried to like coconaras (naturals) on my gas stove and it works but is a pain. I bought a $10 coil burner from Walgreens but again I haven't tried it yet.

After smoking a natural coal I will say that they are better than quicklites, but QLs are convienent.

never get a pumpkin hookah. They suck more than you should ever know.

The QT is about the smallest you should get. Its a great hookah that smokes really well and is bottom heavy so it won't tip.
You can get a QT and a nammor hose from hookah-shisha for just over $60 and it comes with 2 packs of romman (very good shisha). Plus, if you put the discount code "Hookah Forum" in, you get 15% off, so you're well within your price range. Definitely go for that deal. You won't regret it.

The one thing i dont like about Mya is that they hold flavors after a bit. I have a Chic, which is basically the same thing as a QT and i do like it, but it really messes up flavors, even after a soak, wash, scrub, whatever.

If you do decide on the QT you will be thrilled, then you can upgrade to something else in the future.

Also, you say initial investment. I assume you are talking about just buying the hookah, and coals and tobacco will be separate right?

That was my plan, though any package that includes some (to get started) is always an added bonus. There are a few local shops that stock shisha so I can always get it there.
Hookah-Shisha seems to have the best deal, so I'll probably put my order in this weekend. Any flavors to completely avoid?

Well just to update everyone:

I bought the QT. biggrin.gif
Single hose, Blue glass base, 50g of Romman Raspberry and 50g of Romman Cocktail (fruit punch). All shipped for about $48.

It should be here Monday or Tuesday (maybe sooner if I get really lucky)! I've already cleared a spot for it next to my humidor. laugh.gif
