So I'm Building My Own Hookah...

Recommended Posts

I'm in the process of building my own hookah (piece by piece) and I'm having trouble finding parts; namely a stem. Here's what I've got/decided on so far...

I want an Egyptian theme. Color-wise, I'm focusing on black and gold (a little bit of red is OK too since all 3 are my fraternity colors). Also, bigger = better. 30 inches minimum. This will not be my travel hookah.

Hose: This thing is a MONSTER!! Tubing is black and gold; has a snake skin pattern. Handle is metal; looks like a cobra with Egyptian sarcophagus. Will post a pic ASAP.

Vase: Rotating would be nice but not required. I'm leaning towards the black and gold Bohemian base on hookah-shisha.com. I'm open to recommendations.

Stem: Oh boy...this has been the hardest part. A local shop had a gorgeous lil hookah and its stem looked like a sarcophagus. The stem was perfect in every way except the size. The whole hookah was maybe 16" - 18" in height. Soooo...thicker and taller. Gold/bronze in color too.

Bowl: I plan on getting several. A 4-bowl combo and a "king" bowl for sure. This part is the least of my worries.

So yeah, that's my plan. Ideas/recommendations are welcome and encouraged. Thanks everyone!

Save yourself the trouble and buy a KM. Will fit most of what you're looking for, with the only exception being the base color I think. check out hookah company and gothookahs.

I will second that my friend much easier and will smoke better

I say if you can find the parts go for it and have a blast doing it. Two things I would suggest.

1. Forget about the rotator, its kinda tacky and its gonna be more trouble than its worth.

2. Forget about any multi head bowl, if you read their reviews they are useless. Get a standard bowl and a med Tangiers phunnel and you will be set.

Color stems may be hard to come by check out gothookahs.com for some MZ stems you may like.

Guys I think he is looking for making his own custom hookah as in buying each part separately and what not, at least that's what I understand. As for the bowls I would not recommend a 4 head bowl esp. if you are buying it to mix flavors (if you are just do it in one bowl). If you are buying it so you don't have to repack bowls after one is done its not a good idea since each "bowl" on the hookah is quite small and a 4 head may amount to a normal 2 Egyptian bowls. As for a stem you probably will have better luck finding a large stem in local shops especially if you want it to be very detailed and gold/brass as there are not many online, plus if you know the store owner he could probably find one and make a special order for you. Also for the hose if it is home made than it sounds like you know how to make a good hose and if it is not I hope you have a hose that you will be using for constant regular use especially if the hose you have is not washable. That is my advice and hopefully you will not be bombarded with a million "buy the phunnel bowl" statements however I do not know how much it really enhances the smoking session but if you were to buy a phunnel bowl I would say probably buy the big one instead of your party bowl, however those are kind of pricey. Anyway that is my advice and good luck on your search for your own unique hookah.

Do not get the black and gold bohemian vase from H-S. I bought one this summer and it was a major disappointment. First of all, they list the height as 10.5 inches on the site, but when i received mine, it was barely 8 inches tall. The other dimensions were all accurate, just not the height.
But more importantly, the craftsmanship was not good. The vase was not semi-transparent as it appears in the picture or like it says in the description. The black color is painted on, rendering the vase opaque. Plus, the gold designs look like they were painted by a 2-year-old trying to stay in the lines, but failing miserably.
All in all, i returned the vase to h-s, and to their credit, they had good customer service. However, the vase is definitely to be avoided.
