BarredLabel
The more and more I find out about the history behind hookahs, the more obsessed and fascinated I become. I'm really interested in replicating what hookah was hundreds of years ago and I'm curious to know what shisha's and flavours most closely resemble the original smokes. Any info would be great! mushrat
Before the Zag was the Ajamy. My friend from Lebanon talked about this stuff and then showed me how to pack it. This is apparently the original way to smoke tobacco in a hookah.http://www.hookahforum.com/index.php?autoc...tails&id=
Canon
if your getting the tobacco you must get the hookah. this hookah is meant for traditional smokehttp://hookahcompany.com/wood_iranian_hookah_672_prd1.htm
thecyrax
Wooden pipes are my fav. That is exactly like the hookahs they use in hookah bars in Iran.I brought one with me from there, but it cost me around $2 not $130 (original preice $180 LMAO)I'll put up pics later if I can remember

ColibriDon
Mushrat, Since you have experience with this stuff, do you use any special coals for doing this or will any coals work? I'll probably be using Cocos. Looking forward to giving this a try!
BarredLabel
QUOTE (mushrat @ Sep 9 2008, 05:50 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>Before the Zag was the Ajamy. My friend from Lebanon talked about this stuff and then showed me how to pack it. This is apparently the original way to smoke tobacco in a hookah.http://www.hookahforum.com/index.php?autoc...tails&id=29Thanks for that man, really interesting, can't wait to try it!I did a bit of research and found that the first form of tobacco use in a hookah actually resembled more of a cigar that was stuck in the top of the hookah much like a male fitting bowl, instead of using coals they just had the cigar cherry and that was that. a couple hundred years later came the coals and then bowl. From what I've gathered, hookahs changed dramtically around 400 years after they were invented. They changed from primitive objects like coconuts to something somewhat similar to what we have today. Once the large distinguishments between syrian and egyptian melted together, the hookah took on the shape of something almost identical to what we smoke now.If anyone knows more or can correct something I said, please do

I think it might be quite a bit of money. This will be the perfect occasion to break it out!QUOTE (mushrat @ Sep 9 2008, 10:08 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>you can get the ajamey tobacco here:http://www.hookahcompany.com/arab_persian_...k_2659_prd1.htmAppreciate that!! I'll definitely purchase some. Since it's dry it seems like it would be a good base to start with for homemade shisha.
ChicagoJay
I saw some of that Ajamey at the store today. I had no idea what it was. I have tried the zaghoul. I tried it like regular shisha as I didn't have the guts to put coals directly on top. I have to say it smelled and tasted like a wet ash tray. A few hits has me buzzing, but it tasted so bad I took off the coals and got rid of it because I didn't want my hookah smelling like that. The guy where I bought it said it will forever get your hookah smelling like that stuff, so be aware of that.
skimo281
You can always give it a real good cleaning to get the smell out. Without the coals is the way to go with this stuff but I wouldn't use a quicklight. It hits a lot harder without the foil but something about the whole experience makes you appreciate hookah a lot more.
Bulldog_916
Make sure you puff the ajamy. I learned recently that you really have to be careful that you dont take a full hit with it. Pull the smoke into your mouth, move it around, and then exhale. Dont take it in all the way. Longer hoses probably wont serve you well in this application either. Something like a 54 inch hose would be better because you have less distance to pull and you'll be less likely to take it into your lungs. If you look at some old pictures of men smoking tombeik style tobacco, they smoke with a long shaft attached to a short short hose. Remember, like a cigar, not like a glycerin shisha.
