Soup
Well, it looks as though Canada will have another minority government. This time it's Conservative. *** Opinion time *** The only thing I am glad for in this election is that the Conservatives did not get the majority. The havoc that would have been waged if they did is incredible. Think about this....Liberals, left...Conservatives, right...how in hell do long time Liberal supporters suddenly change to vote Conservative? Quite a large number of the population believes that Canada is a two-party system. That I why the Conservatives got power. It's not that they are popular or that people believe their policies, it's that people don't want to vote for the Liberal crooks. Now by process of elimination, you can find out what I voted....thats right, The Bloc! Yeah right! *cough*NDP*cough* They are the lesser of three evils. As it seems, the NDP is the only party that gained anything from this election. They have a record number of seats. The last time they had even close to this number was about 25 years ago. The Conservatives have to deal with a minority government, and the Liberals lost conrtol.
Sonthert
Sometimes politicians and support blocs realize the people are unhappy and switch teams. In Canada, conservatives are similar to our democrats, where the liberals are similar to our republicans, right? Soup
Well, Conservatives are Rightwingers and Liberals are Lefties. I'm not too sure on American government stationing.
Sonthert
In America, the liberals think the government should give money to everybody. The conservatives think we should nuke everybody. The liberals are about civil liberties and giving the country away wholesale to anybody who has a story about their childhoods being remotely unhappy. The conservatives are about facism and making sure that white racists are protected from people that are a different race or religion. George Bush is a conservative, does that clear it up? So are things reversed in Canada?

KBlack
We also have a few here.... in the province of Quebec Soup pretty much summed it up. But they all seem like crooks to me, Liberals being number one. I would have been disappointed if the people re-elected a party that stole millions from them. I am still disappointed that they elected Conservative Bush-lovers. I am not separatist, but i'd prefer splitting from Canada rather than see it become so politically... limp? Sonthert
Yeah, one of the few things that I can put my finger on, that I like about America, is our extraordinarily low excise taxes. In some states, its as low as two or three percent on hookah tobacco. Look at history: prohihibition/making "sin" taxes high makes for a poor economy. Low taxes make for an improvement in the economy. They are racing to raise excise taxes in lots of states. Their idiotic logic being "IF I double the excise tax rate, I will get twice as much tax money!". Preposterous.
dizzing
heh, like when wendy's raised the cost of the jr. bacon cheeseburger from 99 cents to 1.29... dumbest move ever... i'm glad to see that after a few months (of presumably losing a fortune in sales) they dropped it back down
Ravon and The Doctor
It isn't much different in Britain- although we do have a lot more politcal parties theoretically. The three main parties are:[list]Labour are now effectively conservative what with Tony Blair going to war, planning mandatory ID cards, attempting to privatise our medical system, allowing big American companies to buy shares in our previously government run departments such as defence and education. The Conservatives got a massively bad reputation during the reign of Margeret Thatcher and they are still attempting to be hard-nosed upper-class blokes whilst trying to grab votes by taking up Labour and Liberal policies. The Lib Dems are just as wishy washy as ever- because they are for liberalism they are inherently unorganised and weak since their message isn't as easily sloganable.Other parties include Plaid Cymru, the party who 'represent' Wales in parlament and 'fight for devolution'; the British Nationalist Party i.e. Nazi's; RESPECT, the anti-war party; The Monster Raving Loony Party, there for a laugh. Lakemonster
Had to chime in on this one. I am an ultra conservative... I dont think Republicans are conservative. Basically (IMHO) if Liberals were to take power in this country long enough, then the US would wake up one day and look in the mirror and see in big letters across the map "BAJA CANADA" Just look at California, that poor State has been effectively neutered. Sonthert
Yeah, things are so bad here in California, we've been liberal for most of our history and we're the 6th largest economy in the world. Without us, the United States would be alot more insignificant. How do you define your terms, Lake Monster? What is wrong with CA?I don't think republicans are conservative, either...in traditional terms, some southern democrats are more conservative. Fiscal responsibility, for instance? Democrats used to be accused of being the "tax and spend" party. Clinton produced balanced budgets and surpluses for two of the years he was in office. Bush, Bush and Reagan all posted monstrous deficits and ballooned the national debt. Who's who?Socially, I tend towards being a democrat, in some arenas, I am so liberal, I wrap around to being conservative, in other areas, I am just plain conservative. I think government is too big and powerful, ofr instance, but not in any of the ways the republicans think the government is too big...the idea of deregulation is a gross error, regulation, properly acheived and implemented, is important. If we are or have been doing it wrong, we need to change it, not eliminate it.
Lakemonster
Well then. I can understand folks being proud of their State..... so I get where you are coming from on a gut level. Why I hve reservations about Kalifornia? Well. its on the Socialism trail. Civil rights are chiseled away by that state than any other I can think of.... well. theres Jersey and Maryland..... For instance... on one thread. you made mention that If I got caught with the the weapons I had posted in some pics that I would be arrested. No. those are pics of my weapons and they are perfectly legal. In my State we have better embrace on the second ammendment. Its an matter of civil rights, man. Not economy. Hell. my state is TEXAS.... what # did that state come up? I just dont need a nanny type of government that Kali has..... sorry if my post is a bit toothy
Sonthert
My response regarding your weapons was in jest, I support your right to have WMDs in your own home!In Delaware, as Raj (?) was mentioning, smoking lounges don't exist either, tobacconists can't allow people to smoke in their own businesses. In California, that's not true, we can smoke in public places, but only in tobacconist's. Huge piles of states are banning smoking as well...so how is California falling behind? California was the first state to end affirmative action...how about your state? You gesticulate magnificently, what are your specific concerns? Don't mention Rob Reiner, I think he's an asshole, too.
