Apets22
Well, first off what is the hookah sitting on, if its on carpet it could be unstable if its on a table make sure that the tables not extremely not level. If thats not it, you could try putting some things on the sides of the base to steady the hookah. Or get a windscreen.
the_cool
The hookah is on laminate flooring and is unstable as it rocks slightly. But thats not whats causing it, since if i hold the shisha down it still happens. I've also tried wedging tissue under the base to stop it rocking which works for the rocking, but not the rumbling of the coal.Windscreen just stop it from falling, as when i take it off the coal is just a millimetre from falling off! SixPackSunday
this happens sometimes if your foil isnt very tight on the bowl and your hookah has a lot of vibrations from the pull....take some extra aluminum foil and build up a small half inch wall around your bowl and that wil keep them all on there fine for ya
Neil's butt boy.
you mite want to make a defuser for your hookah as well
MechAnt
The easiest way of resolving a problem like this is using less water (only 1 inch to 3/4 inch of the downstem under water) or using a diffuser. If you don't want to spend money on a diffuser, stuffing bendy straws into the down stem. The How-To section has a great tutorial on how to do it and it works great. Wharbone
My homemade diffuser (link in sig) keeps my coals from moving at all.
duckhater
I'm using a diffuser I bought from HS, works great...cuts out the big bubbles and rumble
the_cool
That diffuser looks fantastic! I mite have to try that! You know at the bottom of the stem, the bit that goes into the water, there was a little hexagonal peice that was at the end of it, which has now come off. Does that make much of a difference?

Well at least i can take that out of the equation! Definatly going to get a diffuser, just that im in the UK and most of the accessories i want don't justify the shipping costs well not without adding some flavour atleast! EternalSoil
you can a make a diffuser, there are plenty of people who have made their own in the how-to funhouse. For a quick fix you can do like sixpacksunday said and make a little wall. I have done that before. You basically make a little ring and tighten it around your bowl on the bottom so it stays on, then sticks up above it to keep the coals from rumbling out. Stuie
The hex nut i believe is to diffuse the bubbles a little bit over a straight pipe.Another thing to try is this. Put a towel between the hookah and the floor. The towel will absorb a lot of vibrations and possible prevent the coals from moving.
the_cool
I've used the wall trick many times before but I hate doing it as its hard to move the coals around (even if you do the coals will just rumble back to the original place!) and you have to take the bowl off to remove any ash thats on the foil.Maybe the missing hex nut is part of the reason it rumbles....interesting! Ill try puttin a towel down next time and see how that works.
EternalSoil
just dont move coals and dont worry about ash... the worst place the ash could go would be in the water which is not bad at all!

The one I made goes over the globe on the end of my stem with no problem. Works great and cost me a total of about $1.50.
km3p4rc
get a few layers of cheese cloth (4"X4") and put it on the end of your stem with an elastic, works as a diffuser. Works with me

MR Bubble
One of the issues can be how you set up your bowl. When you lay the foil over the top of your bowl, grasp the sides of the bowl and wrapped under foil with your "holding hand," while lightly pressing the heel of your palm on top of the foil over the tobacco. This will make a slight indentation (or concaved shape) in the middle of your foil. That ever so slight concave indentation on top should help keep your coal pieces in the middle. One of my problems is the foil dancing to the side due to my bowls not being level to the floor. I just need to periodically shift the bowl around on the stem to get them dancing back the other way. No big deal.MR Bubble
