sandsk8erz400
So, its my first week in college, all is going great, been here for about a week and me and some of the guys on my floor decide to go smoke. We got a little handbook the first day of school, so I went through that to check their rules on smoking. Found the page and all it says was you can't smoke in the dorms, and it has to be atleast 25ft. away fomr any building. So we go setup making sure were far enough away not to bother anyone. We've been smoking for about an hour when the two head dorm advisers come out asking whats going on. I asked if we were 25ft. away from the building and they said "yeah, but thats not the problem, hookahs are banned on campus"... He asked if we read the handbook and I said I had checked it, but it turns out it went onto the next page. banning hookahs, cigars, and all that sort because it's drug paraphernalia ( i think I spelled it right) It doesn't matter if you'reonly smoking tabaco out of it, its not allowed. I was respectful and put it away and all, and I can see where they are coming from, but all they would have to do is come up to see what you're smoking and let it be ok. And I can't even keep the hookah in my room, I have to keep it at my buddies off campus. So since we can't smoke on campus I see a lot of trips to my buddies place here soon lol. Any other campuses like this?
r1v3th3ad
Never had a problem with it being banned in the handbook, but did have this... http://www.hookahforum.com/?showtopic=24354I would have one if it wasnt for the smoking ban that just came forth.I would recommend taking up the issue with student affairs. Tell them it is discriminatory to ban pipes, cigars, and hookahs because they are not illegal nor are they drug paraphernalia. Tell them that it is illegal to make recockulous ignorant laws. I would also recommend talking to the ACLU about the issue. If its worthy of a battle, they will pick up the tab.
Apets22
That blows man. Hookahs werent banned at my school, but take some advice from experience.Go into your dorm room.Put a wet towel under the door.Crack the Window.Put a garbage bag over the smoke detector.Smoke up and enjoyI did it allllllll year last year. If youre really concerned set a fan up infront of your door, itll blow everyhting back towards you, and some fabreeze if you are worried about the smell. Hojo
Cigars?Hookahs I can maybe understand, but...cigars? Really?I don't know if hookahs are banned on my university's campus or not, but I'm not sure if I want to risk them confiscating it.
srawas89
Here is what you do....send an email or talk to the president of the university i.e. someone who has major influence on policy. Talk to them and enlighten them on how hookah is in no way drug paraphernalia and that it really is a cultural symbol. If you start throwing in the who discriminating against cultures card (in a nice way) they will most probably be enticed to change their rule on banning the hookah on campus. I was lucky and talked to the vice president at Xavier university who is all for tradition and diversity so when me and other people talked to her about the hookah almost immediately she said that she will make the policy change so that hookahs are no longer banned on campus. Oh and while you are emailing or talking to the guy who has influence on policy VERY POLITELY hint that you would be curious as to what the student body says on this ruling...trust me media press on possible discrimination against a culture esp. middle eastern culture in our day and age will almost immediately guarantee the hookah no longer being banned on campus.Edit: Oh and Hojo if you are not sure if hookahs are banned on your campus call your campus police station and ask they will know. Hojo
QUOTE Edit: Oh and Hojo if you are not sure if hookahs are banned on your campus call your campus police station and ask they will know.I sent them an email the first week of school, and I have yet to get a response. It turns out that I usually don't have enough time to set up and smoke, so the point is moot for now anyway. erufiku
Bag over smoke detector? Really?I smoke in my (small) apartment, a few metres from the smoke detector. Hasn't gone off once... I do open the window a bit when lighting naturals though. Can't stand the smell.

But in the dorms and the smoke detector goes off, youre evacuating the entire building and youll probably get caught and then youre in a mess of trouble. If it happens in my apartment I jump up and turn it off. So its just a safety precaution.
hookah_stud
Hmmm.. My gf and I were thinking about taking the hookah to a garden on our campus. Guess I should check the rules first.

agentscot
yeah, smoking was banned in my dorms too. We had the 25 foot rule as well, but hookahs weren't explicitly banned. However, we just smoked inside and covered the smoke detector with a plastic bag.Actually, once or twice our RA smoked with us...
bjelder
I got hassled by our campus safety about 6 months ago, finally got resolved. We won the case, they had absolutely no rules stating things about hookahs. I made a thread about it a while back. Might go bump it.

dabibbyyo
Yeah, at my campus it's not banned. Smoking is of course prohibited in the dorms, but we have nice balcony and patio areas. We've actually had some pretty funny encounters with maintenance staff and the campus police. We had one cop who walked by saying "This shit is getting real," and another janitor who sat and smoked with us.
cotsi95
I actually got hookahs banned on University of Northern Colorado. We held a smokefest there a couple of times and we had soo many people there that the university banned them. Its sad....GLAD I DONT GO THERE! lol
surface
Wow. I go to the University of Maryland. On weekend nights I can garauntee that there will be people smoking right in the middle square of 3 dorms. It's really not uncommon at all.We smoked in my dorm room a couple times. You cant really smell it outside the door if the window is open, the RA never bothered us about it. But smoking NHT in dorms, HORRIBLE idea, it reeks all the way down the hall no matter what you do. srawas89
surface please do not refer to drugs directly. State it as NHT (Non-HOokah Tobacco). THis is part of the rules and please read them before posting as I hate to see new members who could possibly bring a lot to the forum get banned for not following the rules simply because they didnt read them
web250_is_mad
It's really unfortunate when colleges' are like that.I go to University of Delaware, and fortunately they are lax here, although I did have a cop respectfully ask me what I was smoking once. He even went as far as to smell it, but no further incident.
