Few Questions (wind Cover, Scalli, Etc.)

Recommended Posts

HI!!!!!

So I own a medium phunnel and want to purchase a windcover that will actually fit over the bowl. The large dome windcover from MNH, I'm sure other places carry it as well, is advertized to "fit over Tangiers phunnel bowls" but does it really?

linky - http://mnhookahs.com/product_info.php?cPat...;products_id=50

I own a small stainless windcover and it doesn't come close to fitting. Even when placing tongs below to prop it up it's waaay too short to rest on the tongs let alone the tray.

The way I smoke I'm very particular about managing heat as well as possible and would like to be able to use a windcover, since it's become part of my ritual. If it's relevant for measurement's sake, I'll primarily be smoking from a QT and either a KM Exotica or Amoura in the near future.

Lemme know if you've found another solution (since I'd really rather not own 2 windcovers) or if the dome does actually work (so I can just bite the bullet).

HELLLPPPP!!!!!!

Also why doesn't MNH carry normal scalli mods (non jet glass) anymore? Are Tangiers made products really on THAT big of a backorder with bowls and whatnot? I was going to purchase a small phunnel that would be more sensical for me than my medium and a scalli also, but now I guess I'm stuck till who knows when without...just frustrating, grrrr....

On that note any good links to homemade scalli mods?

THANK YOU!!!!!

Hello,

I have a large traditional windcover, that I prop up on my tongs.. works like a champ. I saw that one that you've linked to in person, and unless it's much bigger than the one I saw, which was huge, it still looked like you might need tongs.. Maybe someone who has one of these from MNH can tell everyone for sure.

They still carry the scalli mod, you just need to search for it. But here is a link anyways.. Need to get one myself, broke mine after a week!

'Broke' as in randomly of it's own volition, or 'broke' as in you've dropped it/a drunk friend stepped on it/etc.?

@OP: I hear you about the wind cover... I'm gonna get a trad large windcover this week so I'll post back to let you know if that fits. In the meantime, your two hands and some alu foil should do the job handsomely

Thanks to both of you! Especially for the link to the scalli mod!

erufiku - took me a second to figure out what the hell you meant - pictured you molding aluminum foil into gloves and manually holding the heat in....ow...

Still looking for someone to answer if the ones advertised to fit over phunnels actually do...

Ummm, 'broke mine' is completely fine. The 'I' before 'broke' is implied, and should be understood. Unless your first language is not english, then that might be understandable.

@OP I gave up on a windcover for mine. But I normally smoke in areas that aren't too windy (although that's hard to do in Pittsburgh... heh) You could try making a foil crown, or modifying an old coffee can, or cannibalizing old beer cans to make a super windcover.

I have that wind cover and can confirm it fits over my small Tangiers phunnel w/o any needing to prop it up. My hookah is a Mya Vortex. I'm not sure if a medium Tangiers is any taller than a small (I would assume not, just wider). The phunnel portion that holds the shisha will be sitting near the top of the wind cover however, but I find the cover useful for starting bowls up, and towards the end when coals are pretty small.

That windcover, mark, is the Taj, if it's the large one which i guess it is. It will work perfectly on Mya's but not MZ's or KMs

Don't have a pic, but to describe a little better what people are saying.

Place you tongs on your ash tray like you were going to pick up the hookah by grabbing the stem where it meets the ash tray. Then place the ends of the tongs on the edge of the ash tray. Should look like slight ramp. Then put your wind cover on. The tongs will hold the wind cover up a little giving you that extra clearance you need.

Can't remember who said it but, you can't use HC's Extra Tall wind cover. Still have to use the tong method to get the clearance i need on my MZ and Phunnel.

cool peeps thanks for the answers and Doubon, pics would be sweet. Yeah Stuie I've done that when I saw the pics and it didn't work for me. I'll have to mod it myself I think, maybe just buy the dome for the QT and make a mod to use it with the KM...

I tried it out on my crappy ass rotator.

Nice Doubon that would be super easy to make too. Thanks for the pics! I think thats what I'll do and just scrap the idea of spending an unneccesary 10 bucks. Also I wonder if punching holes around the circumference of the can with a can opener would affect the heat at all or if that would just be cosmetic. How did you attach the wincover and can? I see no tape...epoxy?

Villager, I thought about that but I'll be using mostly AF and Tangiers and the foil wont hold up against the Tang packing method so I figure the glass mod will be a worthy investment. Edited by giant ninja robot

i cut a beer bottle cap placed it on the rim, bent it and jammed the wind cover inside.
check the last pic (in my first post). took about one minute to make too.

im not too sure about the extra holes though, not necessary IMO,
its working great for me as it is Edited by Doubon

I didn't see that last pic. You sir are a genious. I never would have thought of that and was wondering how to make a temporary fix since I use an egyptian bowl too. Genious!

Now I want a mexican beer...mmmm...did you know they started making Corona in cans? A friend of mine tried it and said the quality is crap. Oh well.

Honestly about the windcover I don't see the big deal about it having to touch the ash tray, I'll take pics of mine later tonight even with tongs mine has to rest on the edges of the bowl, works well for my med phunnel and my KM, so I'll get a pic or two and show you it's not so bad.

But if you're insistent someone else suggested you put a bit of PVC pipe or something UNDER the ash tray to raise it to meet your windcover rather than the other way around, which seems easier to me.

About the "scalli mod" when I did the "phaking the phunnel" in the DIY thread I made my own scalli mod out of a bottle cap with foil wrapped around it. I also made one out of pure foil, it works well but honestly I don't see the need for a mod any more I'm going to try mine again sometime because people still rave about it, but I smoke great without one.

Holy misconceptions!

I don't want a scalli to get better smokes i want it to conserve shisha since I only have a medium phunnel and don't want to have to load up 45-55 gs everytime I use it.

When my windcover rests on the lip of the bowl the coals go out. Everytime and I've tried it with 3 types of coal. It's not like I haven't tried to just let it rest the way it is on the bowl and use it that way. I'm looking for a solution to that problem, maybe I should have made it more clear.

lol just making sure man, I completely understand about the scalli mod to conserve

my bad on the windcover thing too, i find my coals don't really go out with nothing but the top hole but that's me, good luck!

Yeah I've only chatted with one other dude who said he had the same problem with coals going out, everyone else seems to have no problem, so I dunno what the cause is. Chalk it up to bad luck I guess.

Make your own out of foil. For the longest time before I bought my mya, I didn't have one - so we just wrapped some foil around the bowl and pinched it off a little at the top with just a small hole to let some heat escape - that worked for over a year.

You can make them as wide as you want to save yourself shisha!
