onyxmoon000
So I just ordered my first hookah that I will be sharing between 2 other friends. We both pitched in money to get it and we all have no idea how to set it up.Would anyone be willing to share with me the do's and the don'ts, rituals, setup tips, and proper care tips?I would really like some feedback.Thanks.-Connie
SimplexCoda
Well welcome. Read around a bit to see how to set it up right. It takes practice and experience to make it great. Tips i can give you is clean your pipe often. I clean mine every bowl. Heat management is the most important thing when it comes to actual smoking. YOu will get it and good luck. onyxmoon000
How do I clean it? Meaning what do I use to clean it and how?
SimplexCoda
I personally use just hot water and a srcubber made from one of those scratchy sponges and a coat hanger. Some people use things like lemon juice or vodka, but hot water and the little scrubber works just great for me.
bikeAholic
Welcome! :] Making your hookah perfect consists of a lot of trial and error. But, you'll get it sooner or later. Luckily, I caught on pretty quick. I'd advise to switch to natural coals as soon as you get the money. Quicklights can KILL your hookah session sometimes. Cleaning your hookah out after every session is a smart idea and also adding some ice to your base with the water can make your smoke a smoother and cooler smoke. Also, be careful with those coals! They are hot if they hit your foot. They also burn carpet REAL quick. lol Edit: Definitely think about buying a Phunnel bowl or Vortex bowl (I've got a Vortex) like Glassjaw states.QUOTE (SimplexCoda @ Sep 27 2008, 07:21 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>I personally use just hot water and a srcubber made from one of those scratchy sponges and a coat hanger. Glassjaw
As with anything, if you take care of your hookah and give the time and effort into learning how to use it, and keeping i t clean, your hookah will take care of you. With that aside, I'd strongly suggest ordering a new hose (Nammor, or the likes) and a Phunnel bowl. Both will make your sessions that much more enjoyable.I'd post how to pack a bowl, or anything along the lines of that, but I'm bouncing soon so I'll leave that up to the rest of the community.Goodluck, and I'm sure you'll love it. Zinite
QUOTE (onyxmoon000 @ Sep 27 2008, 04:58 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>How do I clean it? Meaning what do I use to clean it and how?A tip I picked up here, which has worked on even the nastiest of odors (Cola), is to fill the vase with a couple spoonfuls of baking soda and a little bit of water, then place the stem on the vase and pour lemon juice down the stem (where the bowl sits). The baking soda and lemon juice will react and bubble up, cleaning every nook of your hookah. Give it a few shakes, wash it out with water, and you can't smell anything. There's a topic on the top of this forum that is dedicated to hookah basics. Read through it a couple times, it'll help. Like others have said though, it's largely trial and error. Once you get basic hookah maintenance down, a few purchases that will make the experience much more enjoyable are a Tangiers Phunnel Bowl, a Nammor Hose, and some Coco-Nara coals. I recently switched to Coco coals, and was surprised to see that they actually last two or three times longer than other coals I have used. Something that makes lighting these coals easier is picking up a $10 Coil Burner at Wal Greens (located in the Kitchen Appliance section) - saves a messy clean up of the stove. Best of luck,Tyler
D-Rock
Freeze the base and stem, use proper heat management, have your friends try it, try lots of flavors, have fun with it!

Also making the base cold will diminish flavor but produce denser smoke, so take that into consideration.
