Flavor.

Recommended Posts

Some time ago I've noticed that I no longer taste the shisha. At that time I just thought it's because my taste buds are fried because I smoke too much. So I took a break from hookah for almost 3 months, but now that I'm back I still can't really taste much.

I get a hint of mango from Nakhla Mango, a whiff of cappuccino while smoking AF Caffe Latte, definitely a lot of anise with Fantasia Triple Apple... But no real juicy taste that everyone brags about.

So, how do I tweak my set-up to get more flavor? I'm using a KM with a Razan, phunnel bowl + scalli or mya (depending on the baccy). Natural coals only. Always lots of smoke, the baccy doesn't get harsh... but no flavor.

Maybe you're just getting used to it, and aren't as overwhelmed with flavor as you used to be.

Another thing is, when you inhale to get massive clouds a lot of the time you bypass the whole 'taste' thing.. if you run the smoke over your tongue the flavor is definitely there.

Try out some mint, that'll shock you with flavor, lol.

Only baccy I got flavor from was Tangiers Cocoa and Nakhla Mint. Yes, smoked them straight up.

But I took a long break so I thought my taste buds will have regenerated by now :/

Maybe I'm just not meant to taste shisha... If so I'll stop being picky about baccy and just buy the cheapest one.

Question? Do you clean your hookah often? How long have you had the same hose and what kind of hose is it? Do you get thick clouds when you smoke or thin clouds? The lack of flavor could be a dirty hookah, a hose that needs to be changed (if its a non-washable one) such as a mya hose. Also if you have thin smoke that it means that you dont have that much heat on your bowl and you need to add another coal which will bring out the flavor more, just be careful not to burn your tobacco.

1. Big clouds.
2. Hookah is cleaned at least once a day, with hot water + brush, then vinegar + brush, then hot water down the stem.
3. Razan hose, less than a week old.

I'll add more heat next time. The coals I have are not that good, they ash a lot, and it's hard to manage the heat. But they don't add any flavor of their own.

Thanks for the suggestions though.

Canon: I'll try smoking w/lukewarm water in the base tomorrow.
