surfpico
Hey hey hey...I am pretty new to the hookah, but I just recently bought one and I'm just curious if it is possible to heat up natural coals on a hot plate? Thanks in advance for all the advice!-Hookah Heather-
dunhillsharp
Although i have never tried it, alot of sites selling the stuff say that you can do it, it just takes a little longer then an open flame.
surfpico
So what about lighting natural charcoals with torch lighters? Will it be too much of a pain or work just as well as a gas or electric stove? Thanks again! -Hookah Heather-
Brad
I light my coals with a big Mapp Gas torch, works great for me.

yashman19
Using a torch lighter would work, better than a lighter atleast, but it might be a hassle to hold the lighter going trying to get nats going. Like Brad said, using a larger torch works great for naturals. I don't use mapp gas, just regular propane, but its a really good, cheap investment to buy a torch from some place like Home Depot You can buy a simple valve that and a cannister of propane for 11.99. All you have to do to get the torch going is open the valve, use a lighter to lite the torch, and have at the natural coals. You can get a couple of natural coals going in under 4 minutes.. Here are some helpful places you can look. Just type in these key words in the Home Depot "key word" search, and it will come up with what I use. For 11.96, you get just a valve, then you can either pay 1.99 for a cannister of propane, or a doller more for a canister of mapp gas (what brad uses), and for one more doller, a cannister of oxygen, but I don't think I would get it, a little too much juice Bernz-O-Matic Brass Utility Propane Torch One canister of propane will last me 3-4 months, and I smoke multiple times a day, so a very solid investment. ANd finally, for the hotplate, it might take you way to long to get coals going, but if you buy one of these it will kick a hotplates but. pavlakos_politakos
or instead of spending money you could just turn on the good 'ol stove.lol.its easier if you have a gas stove but im sure the coil stoves would work.i have a piece of foil with a hole in it under the metal piece (that holds the pots and pans over the flame)so the fire comes out but the coals dont fall in.smart huh? oh and i see you are new.WELCOME!!!and have fun with your arghileh. yashman19
Well alot of people don't always have access to a stove when smoking hookah. Sure I have a stove downstairs in my apt, but the coals stink up the place, and I don't want to piss off my roomates with the smell, so thats why I use a torch in my room. As for gas or electric, electrics are a lot quicker/easier than most gas. On a lot of gas stoves, they only have a bunch of the little itty bitty flames, similar to a bic lighter, and a lot of the time its hard to place a coal in the right spot to get them hot. But on electric coil stoves, you just plop the coal right on there and the coils will have them lit in a a matter of minutes.
mushrat
I've used my gas range at home to light my naturals..only problem is standing ther with the coal in your tongs over the flames. If you are going to use natural bulk charcaols, invest in a propane/mapp gas torch or a butane crem brule torch like i have...
dunhillsharp
you could try an alcohol burner like this one: http://www.backpacking.net/makegear/cat-stove/ they look easy to make and would probably light your coals pretty quick just put a little mesh over the top to set the coals on
surfpico
Awesome idea guys. I really like the backpacking.net - sounds like my kind of project!I bought a butane torch lighter - hands free table top design.. for now. How long do you think it will take to light natural lemon wood coals with that? :)Thanks guys!-Hookah Heather-I am so excited... my hookah arrives tomorrow!!! mushrat
Like this? http://www.kitchen-classics.com/cremebru.htm If so, best thing to do is make a small pile of coals in your holder, and hit the pile with your torch. turn coals over etc for a while, then let them burn while you get the rest of your set up going. When you take some off, add some new ons on to keep a fresh supply going.
methodical13
I use a regular electric stove to light naturals and it takes less than 5 minuites to be hookah ready.
mushrat
Methodical: im talking bulk NATURAL coal, chunks of tree..as opposed to natual finger coals like nour, which are formed using natural charcoal and cellulose binder. You use an electric stove for bulk?
methodical13
I have lemonwood coals thought i got from hooka-shisha. They're the bulk coals that you have to break up to get smaller pieces for the hookah. I just put 'em directly on the coils. It leaves some ash to clean up, but I turn them a couple times to heat each side and they're good to go.
mushrat
Ah, ok. I may have to find a hotplate at the flea market to give it try.

And with the way my parents electric stove is setup, you have to use tongs to keep the coal in place because there is no where to just plop a coal down and make sure the flames hit it. If your stove works for you, then more power to you. I do use my electric coil stove when my roomates arn't home and I can stink up the apartment, and the coals get done in 5 minutes, no more. But like I said, I use my torch mainly because I don't want to use the downstairs stove and stink up the place.
surfpico
I think I'll try out the butane torch, see how that goes... but until it gets here I'll make do with the gas stove. And if both suck I'm just going to the evil place known as Walmart and purchasing a single burner for $8.88. Wal-Mart is a cancer. It destroys communities, small-businesses and the government ends up footing the bill. Some of my family are farmers and Wal-Mart literally controls the livestock market so completely, my uncles had to give up cattle and stick to corn/wheat/soybeans. They rig the prices so that nobody outside of Wal-Mart can make any money and then the like to renig on their deals or wait a year to pay!
