[LB]
First if your gonna make this READ EVERYTHING or its a pain in the ass to keep remakingI had trouble cleaning my hookah with just a brush and rinsing, so i invented a squeegee thats damn effective! it makes the hole inside of the hookah sparkle and smell like fresh lemon. so heres a quick diagram of how it all works- i will explain everything at the bottom1.take the two cuts of your t-shirt2. Make a tiny hole in both cuts, and run a string through them3. Quadruple knot the end of the string (so nothing slides off!)4. Slide the rubber tube onto the string so it is before the cloth pieces5. Take scissors and cut up the cloth fringes (dont cut through to the hole!) but fray it a good amount5. Knot the metal wire to the string and make sure it is properly secured6. The metal wire will act as a rigid string that you can put through all the way through the hookah, so once it is through, pull on the string and voila! take a look at all the green gunk on your cloth swabs7. Wash cloth under sink, Dip cloth in lemon juice, and repeat step 6 until clean8. Wash your hands cause they smell like sh*t now.*make sure the string is about a foot longer than your hookah or more, and that the rubber tube can fit in your hookah *the rubber tube isnt absolutely necessary, a little bit of duct tape properly placed can do the same job *You can add extra tshirt cuts for a tighter swab, but it should be too tight so that the string snaps when you have to pull too hard! *Make pulling the swab through easier by cutting up the cloth more

yashman19
Hmm. A nice way to clean your stem if you don't have a brush. Not a bad idea. I know this would be useful because its not that easy to find a long, narrow brush that can fit into the narrow stem. Thanks man.

jeans
This reminds me of the cloth/string I used to clean out my clarinet--just a piece of cloth attached to a string that had a weight on the end (drop the weight through the tube then pull on the string). HookahDuck
Hmm, not a bad idea at all. My brushes are starting to wear out...Maybe I'll give this a shot. Thanks!
dizzing
i don't know , but i remember posting earlier about the gun cleaning kit. i use about a 30 cal. rifle brush on my mya, and there's an attachment for the rod to drag cleaning patches through which i have used on many a hookah to get excellent results. total cost of .30 caliber rifle cleaning kit shouldn't exceed about 8 or 9 bucks. Sonthert
I prefer lighter fluid, you have to watch the coals or your hair will Michael Jackson on you.
Seandoo
=P i know it sounds stupid but sometimes i wonder how serious some of these suggestions are, such as lighter fluid. i mean yeah clean it out before smoking anything through a chemical-laced pipe, but still.. if you go to any band shops where you can buy accessories for instruments, i know some should sell something called a trumpet snake. it's a bristly brush that's pretty small and fits very nicely into the pipe of the hookah. my mya saray's tubing is a bit small for it, though i was able to run it through with some effort earlier this evening, but it works well on my other hookah like a charm. just make sure you have a good eyeball for size if you do pick one up, as to not get one that's huge... dizzing
excellent point, i actually use a trumpet snake for routine cleaning of my hookah... i use a mya as well, to circumvent the diameter problem, i unbent the bristled end of mine (it's made of wire, and the tip is bent over so there's not a sharp point - you can unbend it and make the thing fit through much tighter spaces - like a hookah)
sheeshabum
Lebanese Blond, Mushrat and Jeans are on the right track>See Jean's patent up above. Why $9 when you can make your own? The steel rod which came with my M 16 machine gun courtesy of President Nixon in 1973 had a metal rod in the compartment in the plastic stock of the rifle (Made by Matel Toy .com,really!) It was stupid since it rattled inside and you could get shot at night especially from all the noise it made.We were issued( Jean's) rope with a 2 inch metal weight and a noose at the end.A piece of flannel went into the noose and one swipe even if the gun was fired made it shiny. Its still being used today. Sheeshabum
Sonthert
Wasn't true about the lighter fluid. I made it up.
dizzing
oh yeah, and a cleaning rod rattling around in the hookah is not really an issue here, is it? the rope is fine and all, but it can take forever. with a trumpet snake with nylon bristles, you can pass it through the stem both forwards and backwards. plus, a weight on the end will make it very difficult to get it through some tight spots. a gun cleaning rod is the best thing to use, hands down. you can make one out of a coat hanger, but it can be tricky. plus , you can't really put a wire brush on the end of a coat hanger. trumpet snakes are about the perfect thing for routine maintenance, and they fit through all sorts of awkward passages. you could probably even use them on hoses, but i wouldn't recommend it - hoses seem to be super fragile and prone to being screwed up by stuff like that. [LB]
mushrat could you move this into the 'how-to' section of the forum. I just dug it up and figured some people who don't fee like ordering a squeegee online might find this useful Edited February 4, 2007 by [LB]
