Improvements

chris, the issue with being able to set the temperature is that there isnt one temperature that a coal stays at. When you inhale, the coal jumps from a cool ~100* to probably around 300*. This brings up the issue that you would need something to switch it on and off when you pulled, like i said with an insulated resistor. If you had something like that then you could hold enough heat when power wasnt going through it to keep the shisha warm. The issue would be putting enough energy into it fast enough to bring it up to that magic heat right before you pull. If i can get a pass to work on it my senior year i will look into it but no time right now.

thats why the switch/button to put the power supply through the resistor would be located on the hose so before you hit you hold the button for a few seconds and then let go when you exhale, it would take some getting used to but im 90% certain it would work.

or another idea like tom said would be have a burner that could raise enough above the shisha as to not burn it then again have a button on the hose to lower it back on.

There has got to be some "optimal" temperature that doesn't burn the tobacco but almost "vaporizes" it (i don't know if i can use that word, but i can't think of another word to replace it, i will take the 1 day ban, or just pm me and i will edit the post)

Correct me if i am wrong, but when you use a jet bowl with the glass mod the coal is set outside the the hole at which air is pulled through. Because of this the coals do not actually vary in temperature when you take hits b/c there is no way of the air being pull from the coal to heat it up. If you could create a circular mechanism as i suggested early that had a hole in the center that would allow air to be pulled into the glass mod, wouldn't this work the same way?

I mean if you had to use this with a jet bowl and in total it cost $100 bucks for the bowl and "rechargeable" coal but you would never have to buy coals again, wouldn't it be worth it?

Once i get around to actually purchasing a jet bowl i figure this could be tested with the coil of a hot plate as it would only be in contact with the glass mod and still allow for air to be pulled threw the hole. Edited by chrisrbts

There is still air flowing by the coals when you pull though which heats them up. If the coals sat at a steady low temp you would barely get smoke.

Honestly guys don't stress over it. Go look in the How-To subforum and read the pages and pages of different concepts people have been thinking about for years.

The electric coal is truly the holy grail of the hookah world.

Tried it, I took the heating element from a parabolic dish heater and attached a light switch to it. I was able to get smoke, but it didn't taste right, like it was too hot, but there was not enough smoke for that...

In the pic, it's missing a ceramic pot I put over the top to keep some heat, and protect it.

I imagine this is something like the difference between using natural wood coals and quicklights. I'm no expert on thermal dynamics, but I assume the material of the object giving off heat somehow affects the properties of the heat it gives off? Anyone with more of a science background on this, feel free to come in and clear this up...

I imagine the way to get around this would be to not directly heat the shisha--in other words, use electric coils to heat a ceramic disc, for example, rather than just sticking the coils right on top of the bowl. Thoughts on this, anyone?

edit: parabolic dish heater: does this have a ceramic portion at the bottom? I'm not so familiar with this device. If that's the case then I'm not sure what would be a better heat conductor--glass, maybe? Basically if anyone has a jet glass funnel with the screen, and access to heating coils, I suggest they try this out and report back to us. Edited by wilarseny

just an extremely dense coal. it doesnt need to last forever, but if i could use the same 3-4 coals for the whole session that would be amazing. i already have a self cleaning hookah, i tell my friend that i pack the bowl and do coals, and he cleans it.

I think the heat would be the same except for the quantum physics part. Depending on the structure of the molecule it can release different amounts of energy at a time. It doesn't release energy all at once they get sent out in packs that vary in quantity.
