Terrible Session

Recommended Posts

So, I can't really figure out why it was so bad.
We had Romman Coconut, which was fine last time, but this time every time we inhaled we'd start gagging.
It was probably the worst smell I've ever smelled coming from my hookah as well.
So we tried another flavor, same thing, wasn't quite as bad, but it was still pretty terrible.
So, we broke down the hookah and tried to clean it out a little better to no avail.
I'm thinking about giving it up for a few weeks because of that.
Still can't figure out what's making it taste so bad, anyone have any ideas?

Too much coal. Romman burns very, very easily. you have to ease it into smoking temp. and keep it from completely scorching. That would explain the flavor and the gagging, and the smell is the burning honey/glycerine/flavoring/tobacco.

well you have to consider the following:
tobacco
coals
cleanliness of the hookah and accessories (hose, stem, base, bowl)

The only time ive ever had repeat crap bowls was when i was using expired instant lights that would crumble and rape the tobacco.

If something is in the hookah itself, its possible that the taste could make the sesh unpleasent, but i dont see how it would make you gag. UNLESS there is residue like rust or something in your hose. that would probably do the trick.

I don't think it was the coals, since we were pretty careful and split a quick light in half, taking half off on my small bowl. We've done it fine in the past with the same setup and everything.
We used AF for the second bowl, and it had basically the same issue to a lesser extent.

I may just have to soak it in baking soda and lemon juice tomorrow and try it again.
I think I'm losing my taste for the sweeter flavors like orange cream and strawberry. Might try some Macchiato or something to see if it's any better.

Thanks for the help. I'll go clean it out and watch the heat for the next time. =)

the only problem that could really cause gagging is harshness. Sometimes Romman has a slight tingle, like some Tangiers flavors, especially the Sweet melon and i actually have experienced it with Coconut. Old AF usually smokes harsh as well - all this with no correlation to heat management.

I think your hose is holding onto the old flavor. When you pull through it, it just makes you gag with the old flavors mixing. IMO, grab a washable hose or a DIY hose from home depot. Got mine and still smoking clean and clear after 9 months.

I find that whenever I start to cough while smoking hookah, or my throat get tickled, I know there is too much heat generating harsh smoke. There are a few things you can do to fix this, in the following order:

1.) Purge (Obvious)
2.) Take a coal off.
3.) Rotate coal/coals to different areas away from the previous spot.

Usually that fixes the problem for me, if not, you may be getting too much heat because you packed the shisha too close to the foil and it's actually getting burnt.

Hope that helps.

harshness doesn't cause gagging.

harshness causes coughing. ive had flavors that were so strong and disgusting i started to gag after taking hits (gag as in throw up). it was hitting perfect and my friends liked it...but if you saw me, youd think everything was coming up right there.
