Radioactivity?

Recommended Posts

Good thing my school lets me get this stuff... let's see what we have here.

Ok, so I don't know tons about radioactivity, but the article basically says that hookah tobacco has similar levels of radioactive elements like Polonium to cigarettes (if not lower), but it's smoked for longer so it balances out (kind of a silly conclusion).

However, they say that the tobacco they use was 3 different brands that were randomly bought in Egypt, but don't mention the brands at all, probably to protect the manufacturers. It's a goofy article. If anyone wants me to post it somewhere I can, but it's a medical journal and thus is really dry reading.

edit: good point. You will all have to take my word then, haha. Edited by Glottis2

Sounds to me like you'll be more damaged by the radiation from the sun then smoking hookah once in a while.

+1

Really random topic for a study given the miniscule amount of papers dealing with hookah in general. I don't know what it's trying to accomplish... well, at least we know that "those damn terrorists" aren't adding toxic waste to our precious moassel (excuse the rude humor, I just had to).

everything that is/was living is radio active to an extent hence how carbon dating works.

ya it probably doesnt make it better for you to smoke it but i really wonder if its just kind of one of those "oooo there are x amount of mold spores in your home, be ware"..."o ya but its less that there are out side"

True, but they aren't talking about naturally occurring radioactive carbon, they are talking about Polonium and other radioactive isotopes that come from tobacco. I think it's reasonably safe to say that, based on evidence, smoking hookah doesn't improve your health and this is likely one of the many ways it doesn't.

The goal of the article is to bring more attention to the radionuclides in tobacco in general, not just in hookah.

And it's definitely interesting, because they are right, not much research is done in the field at all. It is something to look into.

The doses of these radioactive elements are quite high too, even in comparison to cigarettes.

What happens is these chemicals are released through the combustion process of the tobacco.

Read it if you can, it's not something you want to just skim through.

I know it's easy to say oh whatever and poke fun at it, but here is the thing. A lot of us look down on cigarettes.

When you and I both know that cigarette smokers practice the same techniques in disregarding scientific studies against that.

you must be smoking some harsh shisha i don't ever let my shisha burn

The combustion process is not smoking burnt shisha.

It's the process of burning the shisha. So as you "cook" the shisha, these radionuclides are released. Edited by momatik
