mattarios2
yeah and with tangiers you can re-coal multiple times 2-3 times before the flavor even starts to become faint, that is my point, starbuzz doesn't handle the long lasting flavor that other brands do, and at 19.95 a tub, I'll pass. mattarios2
QUOTE (Scoop @ Oct 12 2008, 03:45 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>if youre packing it right, im not sure what the hot is. im also not seeing how the windcover is going to help. I use 3 natural coals almost no matter what coal on the small phunnel. 3 golden canary pieces, 3 1/4 piece of exoticas, 3 pieces of banned coco coal. *with the exception of coconara, which was hit and miss, 2 or 3 pieces*. 3 pieces is the same as 2 pieces with a wind screen imo except i dont like wind screens as they tend to overheat and i dont trust them. Instant light coals I use 2 pieces of all 33mm coal like 3kings, or 3 pieces of banned coco instant lights. If the humidity has been changing rapidly it may be harder to smoke, or more sensitive to heat, but for the most part i haven't had any problems *exception, f-line cocoa was a pain in the ass for the first few times*.edit: starbuzz is terribad. everything tastes chemikill.I figured 2 coals on the edge of the bowl with a windcover would be in between 3 coals and 2 coals. because with 2 coals towards the middle of the bowl I get a little smoke, 3 coals gets hot, so I thought 2 coals on the edge of the bowl with a cover would be a happy medium.I have been doing your method lately with packing the bowl, and when I have light smoke it tastes great with no tickle, when I get more smoke I get a hotness, it isn't a tickle in the throat just hot, almost like you feel like you are taking a huge huge rip, after pulling on the hose for 2 seconds I don't know what I am doing wrong! Scoop
problem with the windcover and coals on the edge, i dont know which one you have, but both of my windcovers are barely wider in diameter than the phunnel bowl; coals on the edge just get pushed inward. not sure what hot means. like it makes you cough? its harsh but not a throat tickle? mattarios2
right it is hot and hard to inhale but there is no throat tickle. But i was browsing around (somewhere else) and read somewhere someone said, when they say you wanna pack it just like it is in the tub, that means the way it comes in the bag from eric, that doesn't mean pack it the way it is in your tupper ware.Does that make sense? So if this is true, then I should be packing it and packing it down no? The way it comes from eric is like 1 big brick of shisha. I'm thinking I should just stuff it with a shitload of shisha and make it sit right below the rim of the bowl and see how that goes. What do ya think? Scoop
i pack it down but not heavily. you dont want pockets of air in the middle of it. and i have mine a bit over the rim of the bowl, and push it down with the foil

I used to smoke strickly SB and Tangiers but as of late SB has let me down. I used to be able to pack on the coals for super thick clouds and it would last a very long time. For the price Tangiers is the best bang for the buck. It's sad because SB has some awesome flavors like sweet melon blue mist and white peach but even those have gotten that chemical like taste to it. SB has gone the way of Fumari IMO as in it used to be a personal fave then went to crap with not bein so consistent. Tangiers all the way! Sorry for trolling but I just had to put my 2 cents in. Bulldog_916
Halve your HC coconut coals. I told you these things put off mad heat. Cut them in 3 halves on a cutting board or something. Then heat up the three halves. It may seem cumbersome, but it's the way I've learned to deal with high-heat coals and Tangiers.
mattarios2
hmmm, is it worth it to always have to cut em up? I'm thinking maybe I'll get diff coals for the tangiers and use hc for all other brands. But thanks alot for the advice, didn't think they would put out "that much" more for it to be a problem, thought I could just use 2 coals on the edges, I'll either cut em up or get some other coals to use, thanks again. liquidglass
sounds like you're doing everything right, the scoop method i've only tried once i prefer snoopys method of one piece/clump at a time you don't pack it until it's in the bowl but it's the best I've tried so far.If you want some kick ass coals for tangiers exoticas all the way imho. 3, 1/4th pieces of it last a while and smoke perfect they put off just the right amount of heat. But someone else mentioned halving it or turning a coal on it's side I did that with the coconaras and it made a big difference. The windcover could always help but of course I recommend exoticas.

mattarios2
all taken care of, i listened to bulldog and used half of a HC coconut coal, I took 2 coals and cut them in half so I had 4 halves. I used 3 halves and then added the other half later and had no harshness with good clouds. Thanks guys, allset
Bulldog_916
I dont really think its too much of a hassle, actually gets you more economy out of the coals imo. The best coals that I've used for tangiers thus far have been Diamante Easy Lites. They sometimes break during smoking/ashing but they put out nearly ideal heat for tangiers shisha. newjacksm
I do not recommend the japanese exoticas. they really are pretty bad.... I mean you get a lot of coals for 9 bucks but you use about 6 a session and they ash everywhere and just a hassle. I think its way worth to spend the extra money and get the cocos, but I really dont feel like doing that either so I bought regular exoticas to try those out. If that fails I just have to get HC NHT Coals.

B/c I see people use 4 coals on a tangiers bowl, is that the immitations or is it the goldens? If it's the goldens that means I will go through 8 coals a night and within 2 weeks I will already need new coals and they are 15 a box, so that would be quite pricy. If that is the case I will just stick with HC coconut coals. xpimpitox
yea they do last as long as you say. They are pricey but you get what you pay for becuase those things are incredible minus the shorter duration.
mattarios2
What are they like impossible to crack or something and heat up nicely and burn evenly?I read reviews and people mainly just said they were awesome coals.
Click
The Golden Canarys are also a lot smaller than any other Japanese Coal/Coconut Coal I have seen.
xpimpitox
Canary's would light within a min or 2 each, would ash extremely well (as in not an ashy mess everywhere) and burn at the perfect temp for tangiers and pretty much any brand. my only gripe is the price. the longevity was never an issue for me since i tend to smoke 60-90 min sessions on average so I wouldnt use much anyways. I'll def purchase more in the near future for nostalgic reasons.
Bulldog_916
http://www.wasserpfeifen-planet.de/lshop,s...hishakohle,.htmThis is the brand and type of coal I was talking about. If you find these at a local shop, dont hesitate. They are great coals, just with little quirks you have to work out with time and experience. Good luck. I dont mind them as much when I smoke them out side, then again they go out quickly 30 min tops and I have to light a new set. I wouldnt reccomened them only because they dont last nearly as long as cocos and they ash a lot but if you dont mind them last 30 min maybe a little longer then go for it (cause they are cheaper then the golden canary) Otherwise stick with what you have, I am still doing some coal searching Cocos seem the best right now for me but I am still doing a coal search I got Exoticas sticks recently gonna try those out.
