healthy dangers or lack thereof

Recommended Posts

im 16 and ive been smoking for about 3 years i just bought one so i can smoke at home but before i do my mom has been on my case about how bad it is for me. does anyone know of any websites that talk about the lack of danger in hookah smoke that i can show my mother? or does anyone have any statistics that would prove that hookah smoke is not all that bad?

No definitive, clear-cut verdict on that one, I'm afraid. There's ton of into here, though:

Just tell your mom things could be a lot worse, like you doing crack or listening to Slipknot albums...

actually, a lot of data has surfaced stating that while hookah smoke is certainly not worse than smoking cigg's.... Most likely it is nearly as bad. The only argument really that can be made is that it is done much less frequently(in most cases), and creates little addiction.

Well it's not adding to your health, but like others said, it could be a hell of a lot worse.  I don't have scientific proof, but I would be very surprised if it could be proven that shisha is worse than cigarettes; if nothing else, it's done FAR less frequently and that gives it a *benefit* over cigarettes.  Hopefully you'll get to continue smoking ma'assell, but if not, only 2 years until you can do what you please ;)

There's a dearth of evidence that shows that people who wait to engage in potentially habit-forming activites until the age of 18 are less likely to become addicted. From the tobacco manufacturers of America, don't smoke until you're 18. Since you've been smoking three years, its a little late.Despite what you hear on the streets...SMOKING HOOKAH IS BAD FOR YOUIt is not made of molasses, glycerine and fruit. It is made from tobacco and tobacco is deadly. Nicotine is still, to this day, despite other more technologically advanced stuff, used as a pesticide. Being independent is one thing, being a slave to dependence is something else. There are no statistics, that I know of. Little scientific research has been conducted. Good luck, no offense, I hope your mom wins.

I dont know where the misconception in the highschool/college crowd came from that smoking hookah is perfectly healthy. Everythng from "theres only .05% tar" to "the water filters out the bad stuff" to "Its ok because its not burning" is commonly overheard at my local hookah lounge. I have to correct the majority of the people who smoke with me by letting them know that this ISNT good for you."1000 hits of hookah is the same as one ciggarette." Perhaps its just wishful thinking on their part...Im kinda with Tangiers on this one. Perhaps ask your mom if you can smoke only very occasionally. Perhaps when you have friends over, and no more than twice a month.

Right..I've been saying the same thing for a while now. Tobacco is BAD for your health. You are smoking TOBACCO. Its not good for you.
I suggest taking up a safer hobbie. Grenade juggleing? pull the pins first, adds to the excitement.
Sorry if this isn't what you were looking for, but we're not here to help convince anyone's mother that It's ok to let their 16 year old son to smoke.

it is only .05 percent nicotine...... doesent mean its good for your health but as far as i know thats a hellofalot better tahn sigs on the addictivity chart. Plus theres 0.00% tar- cant say that for cigs
tangiers i know your tobacco isnt washed so i cant say the same
so try explaining to your mom that much, its definently better than cigs of you get the correct brand- when your 18 you can move into Tanigers

Go to hookahcompany.com/faq.htm
It has the the percentages of nicotine and what not. for the hookah and ciggs.
But I say it is still unhealthy, and to be taken with a grain of salt.

Research has shown that reading FAQ's is indeed detrimental to one's health.

Tangiers is unwashed. It is chopped up some, but other than that I do not process it other than cooking and flavoring. In fact, I've found all sorts of interesting things that needed removing:straw, hay, wheat, alfalfa, grass, corn silk, a pecan, a nickel and twine/ burlap. Those numbers on the sides of the package are highly suspect. Tangiers is only .3% nicotine. Therefore, it should pack less of a buzz than other unwashed brands. The same logic I threw around at Eissenberg and LT applies here...we don't know whats dangerous. Genetics may play the largest part, it may not. .05% nicotine could be 100 times too much. Unless you can honestly say "I don't mind cutting 10 years off of my life." then don't smoke a hookah. When I say cutting 10 years off, that means, not only will you die 10 years sooner, you'll start having health and physical problems 10 years earlier. Lung disease, cancer, heart disease...its great...

At least a tobacco manufacture is forthcoming about the dangers of smoking.I dont believe I have become addicted to hookah in the sense that I nearly became addicted to black and milds once.  After 2 packs of those, 1 each day after work I started looking forward to getting off work and having that cigar.  At that point I decided I needed to quit.  Hookah I sometimes forget about smoking for a week or 2 at a time, and usually I decide I had better try to smoke up some of this surplus tobacco.  I think part of it is the inconvenience of having to clean the pipe, set everything up, and keep up with coals that keep me from doing it more often...and Im happy to keep it that way.

How about some more? This is my theory and is in no way supported or refuted by direct scientific observation:Smoking Hookah Will End Your Life Prematurely!Stopping smoking will lengthen your life.I don't want anybody coughing up black lung on me and complaining that I didn't warn them."The man in black goes lurking through...and he doesn't even think of you"
