Hookah Lounge Owners A Question If You Would

Recommended Posts

Ok, so I go to several hookah lounges/bars, and for some reason the smoke tastes different. I watch them prepare bowls and what-not, and I know the shisha they use, so the only conclusion I can come to is there is something in the base. At one I go to, Aladdins, the base liquid is GREEN. Yes, green. Dunno why. Probably because they use all brass hookahs and it helps them from not tarnishing. No clue. But I was wondering if you could let me in on the secret, or is it something that if I'm not a lounge owner, I can't know?

Thanks for any responses,
Mirus

Dirty water can be green. I bet that they don't wash their hookahs often.

+1, went to one lounge, saw water that was various shades of green in the vases, walked out.

In your case it's probably what everyone said above, but I know that some bars are bad about keeping their hoses clean and categorized by flavor. Cinammon, Mint , Earl Grey, and other such flavors have a tendency to stick in the hose, so the bar where I go makes sure to keep those separate from the others.

What company makes Earl Grey flavor? I love Earl Grey tea

Nakhla, it's the Sheherazade line I believe.

Ah thanks. I went to my favorite hookah lounge friday, sadly the one with green liquid, and found some other sad things. They raised their prices on food and drinks. So a normal hookah out night for me, including 2 hookahs and a coke, and my friend got a lamb pita, which normally totalled costs $25-26 cost $33 and change. Pissed me off. So my friends who went are over now with my 3 hose Legends going now, and we are all sitting on pillows and listening to arabic music to make up for the bad lounge night. Once we get a townhouse together, I'm gonna make a room dedicated to hookah with persian rugs and nice pillows all over the floor. No more nights out unless a good bar opens.

One thing that you have to remember about lounges is that the people who prepare the hookah generally prepare hundreds a week. If a person has been working at a hookah bar for a long time they generally know things about hookah that most people would never think of. Hose systems, stem systems, the ways everything can impact taste, how to exactly perfectly pack their bowl.

I went through training for 3 weeks solid to just learn the basics of how my bar works. This last summer I would average 200+ hookahs a night. After so many you just get to know what a flavor is supposed to taste like. One thing that my friends always complain about is when they smoke at home it never tastes the same as at the lounge. Part of that is that they have one hose and use it for all flavors. But, another thing is they dont mix the tobacco right and they dont pack the bowl right.

And as for the green liquid, if it is a brass hookah it may be corrosion. That would be very gross if it was tho...

Bingo! Sadly, there are hookah bars that I have been to in the past that rarely clean their hookahs and everything has a mint undertone. It disgusts me that for $20 they aren't willing to put in the effort to clean the hookah and use their brains to assign specific hookahs/hoses for specific flavor types.
