Basically a week before the show opened I was hired to design lights for City Circle's (a community theater group in Iowa). I didn't get a script or see the show all the way through until 2 days before opening night. We had a show Friday morning and I wasnt happy with the lights after the run Thursday night so I ended up staying at the theatre until 3am (and had to be back at 8:30 for the show at 8).

It was a fun show, and I think it turned out pretty well.

I took pictures the last night. LINK Some shots are better then others. I didnt get the settings right unlil after the first song.

I read a review of the play and was shocked that they mentioned lights

Let's take some specific examples. "Three Is A Magic Number" is one of the best songs in the production, and City Circle's staging of the song does justice to the song. Michael Stokes has a strong lead vocal. The stark lighting, using a dark orange filter, sets the scene perfectly. (Indeed, Will Brown's simple but effective lighting design is first-rate all throughout the show, a study in how to use a minimalist lighting approach for maximum effect.) Finally, the choreography doesn't overwhelm the ensemble, something that can't be said about many of the segments.

Scene they are talking about: LINK The only back light is coming from the Cyc. I could of also used orange from our color changers, but it would of made a different look like this one. I actually prefer the first one, and it allows me to cheat and make more looks using the same lights.

In this review it seemed like they liked the lighting better then the show blush.gif
haha minimalist lighting. There was more that I wanted to do but didnt have time to do it. Most of what I wanted to do was just effects (there was a scene where he was watching tv etc.) I really dont think I would have changed alot of the looks if I had more time.

I can post a link to the full review if people are interested in reading it.

I'm really glad people liked what I did with this show. This show was the first time that I designed lights by myself, and I was really nervous that I would screw it up (I almost had a mental breakdown tuesday night, I was running out of time and didnt think I knew what I was doing). I am designing for Nuttcracker next month, and I was really dreading it before this show but now I'm looking forward to it.

By the way that you mods for moving this to the right thread.

ya the gobos are sweet. I used to design lights at the last university i went to. It was awesome.

The star gobos were in Twin Spins, so I could spin them at different speeds. I also had a breakup gobo in there so they twinkled. We borrowed two star gobos from the university that were just pieces of steel with holes punched in it. But they didnt fit into the Twin Spins, I didnt want to cut them, so I had to use the ones that we had.
