dafunk5446
So I got my first batch of tangiers horchata yesterday, opened the package and it smelled kinda burnt. So I let it acclimate for around 12 hours and it was starting to smell sweet but not a strong horchata smell yet. So I put it in a tupperware and left the lid cracked. Got home from work today and it still didnt smell like horchata , but it didnt smell bad at all so I loaded up a bowl in my small phunnel. Did the "drop-in method" and got it packed tighter then what I would use for other shisha's. I also filled it to the rim and then did a single foil of Reynolds heavy duty. Poked two rows of holes with a toothpick and one in the center for ventilation. Threw on 2 cocos and started puffing. I didnt get any harshness at all and had huge plumes of smoke. The only thing was the flavor was lacking, I would get random subtle hints of horchata but nothing major. It tasted alright, just not a clear horchata-ee taste. Did some searchs and found a few suggestions on how to make the flavor better such as more shisha and more holes, are there any other suggestions anyone can give me? How does your horchata taste? Should I maybe leave the lid off a little longer? I am in colorado and we are having our regular fall weather where it gets like 70F during the day and 40F at night with fluctuations in humidity. Any help would be great. Thanks in advance.

Giant Ninja Robot
Well this might not help much, but I've only ever smelled horchata never smoked it, and the scent was pretty intense. So by your description of the scent of yours it seems like something's wrong.Sorry I don't have practical advice, but yeah it smelled amazing and I hope you can get yours right as rain for that amazing smell and taste (I'm assuming) to come through
Hojo
All of my Tangiers completely fills the room with whatever smell it is supposed to be, so it may be an acclimation problem. When you can smell it a room or so down, you are good to go.Acclimate it more, and make sure to stir it up often to let fresh shisha have contact with the air. Zyram
For tangiers, I load my bowl about 3/8 of an inch above the rim, then I take a small peice of foil and push down on it really hard all the way around, throw the piece I used to pack it tightly away, then get another piece of foil and pull it tight around the top. Whatever you use to poke holes, make a LOT of holes, and be sure to push it down into the shisha. For my first few tries I way underpacked the bowl by just putting it to the rim, ever since I started stuffing the bowl then compressing it, it's the most amazing shisha I've had.-Z

Scoop
if it doesn't smell like horchata, i dont think it will taste like it. every flavor of tangiers ive had smells exactly how it smokes. if the humidity is fluctuating it will be hard to acclimate it. try a humidor? shrug

Scoop
my horchata smells like the real deal, tastes very similar but has a strong cinnamon component.
dafunk5446
I loaded a little more in the bowl this time and used a few more holes that were larger and it seems to be a little better, not sure if the difference is due to acclimation or if it is due to packing method. Still not quite as strong of a flavor as I would like but its there a little more now. Like you said scoop, its got a cinnamon component to it, and thats about all I taste is cinnamon. The smoke smells more like horchata now. Im thinking im gonna let it acclimate a for a few more hours and see if that doesnt bring it out more. mattathayde
ive had hit/miss luck with tangiers acclimation. i cant get the flavors to have huge amounts of smell to them and if i acclimate longer they lost flavor and get kind of a weird taste to them. i just kind of smoke it at what it is, havent gotten time to talk to the local lounge that sells it to see what to do.i think just some places dont allow it to smoke as well as it does it others just from humidity and temp changes-matt
Click
Pack the bowl and poke the holes in the foil and just let it sit for a couple hours.
