mape
So I guess the title says it all. I'm currently trying to build myself a portable hookah for travels and festivitys. And since I have access to a metal shop I figured, why not.So the idea is that I make a small portable hookah and a container in which I can transport the coal/hookah/tobacco. And when I want to smoke, the container works as a secondary cooling chamber. This is how I imagine the hookup. http://mape.the.pirate.se/vattenpipan_deluxe2.pngFirst the smoke goes though the inital chamber and is filted once. The pipe looks like this (its 20cm high an 5cm thick).http://mape.the.pirate.se/genomsk.pngThen it's transfered over to the second chamber where I put the tube like a spiral at the bottom. I then plug the end of the tub and make lots of small holes maximizing the smokes contact with the icecold water (I plan on having on of those "plastic bricks" of ice you have in the freezer.. with me at all time for easy cooling).Like this:http://mape.the.pirate.se/roektest.pngAs of now the steel body bottom is finished. What remains to be crafted is the bowl and wires/container fixing.I've gone though this over and over again and the only flaw I can see is that the tobacco will get to hot (the hookah is made out of stainless steel). But I ofcourse want your thoughts on the project.I'll keep you updated! -mape
yashman19
Very interesting concept. If it does end up working, you will have to keep us updated. Actually, it would be very cool to see some of your in progress pictures. If this is too difficult, you might just want to stick to making your own hookah and a case seperately, instead of making the case an additional cooling chamber. People, including myself have made homemade second cooling chambers, and yes they do work, but are sort of a lot of trouble to setup, and not especially worth the extra trouble setting it all up. So just making your own hookah would be a great idea, and then just somthing to store/transport it in. Just a thought though, regarldess, let us know how your project progresses. HookahCaterpillar
Man i love this forum, didnt realize there were so many other hookah lovers out there with the same ideas I have had. Only difference is you actually put some real work into an idea i just had in my head. It seems like a good idea althought i honestly dont completely understand it but as you get further along defenitely keep us updated as yashman said. I might be willing to buy one from you once you have the idea perfected. I had this idea to have some kind of backpack that held the hookah with the hose coming out of it. Then the bowl is covered up by a regular wind cover so the coal wont fall on you or anything and you can just walk around with a hookah on your back. Good luck man I hope you succeed. You get a satisfaction building something great with your own hands, and then getting to use it. I commend him, but I was just offering some suggestions. I think its a great idea. PipeSmokeMcGee
yeah, by all means: do it! building stuff is much more rewarding that just buying a similar product. You have truly earned your shisha privileges, not just bought them! definitely keep us posted!

I know when I make something it gives me a sense of accomplishment, and makes me feel more manly Sure it might be easier to just pay for a hookah, but I imagine that its a totally different experience smoking out of something you made yourself as apposed to typical, run of the mill store bought hookah. HookahDuck
Leb- as I understand it, those already exist. However I have heard it is nearly impossible to maintain a good session with one. It is always either too hot, or not nearly hot enough
Sonthert
They have electric head heaters. I understand they work poorly, from a person I knew that owns one.
mape
Yeah I asked around a little on electronic heaters but it seems they are more or less frowned upon in the hookah community. And besides the fact that they are frowned upon they apparently work really poorly. Either you get to little heat or you end up burning the tobacco..Anyone up for making one that has a thermometer you can put in the tobacco? mape
Jup, share your wealth of information, I don't have any particular use of it since the plans are more or less set in stone but It's always fun seeing how other people tackled the program
