Ash On The Phunnel Bowl

I've been noticing that after smoking a bowl that there is a LOT of ash on the downstem where the bowl connects to my hookah. Am I doing something wrong or is that pretty typical?

its not from you clearing the ash off the bowl onto the tray?

That's what I was wondering but no. I got the bowl at a local shop (chinese made?) and the opening is a little lower than the rim, so maybe its pulling ash in from the holes in the foil? Edited October 27, 2008 by slingham

if your using a funnel bowl make sure you dont have coal sitting over the hole in the center or ash sitting over the center of the hole or you will get some ash down there. In a standard bowl I am not too sure ? If the holes are big enough and you have enough ash in there it could possibly make its way through all the shisha into holes and into the stem.

Or if the syrup gets ashy and the syrup drips down the stem youll have ashy syrup. Edited October 27, 2008 by newjacksm

I put three exoticas in a circle around the outside rim, I make sure never to put one over the hole. I guess it's not that big of a deal, just don't want ash getting into the water.

I get ash sometimes in the stem its the inevitable if the exotica ashes during a session on the foil and your sucking on the hose the ash will go towards the center hole.

i get that usually with a phunnel (not a lot but some), no holes over the middle and coals are left on the out side, its just how it will work, the water should catch anything that makes it down

I got the same thing happening so I started to use a mod.
