Tangiers

Recommended Posts

Ok guys i dont want to sound like a wimp but im starting to think i am one : (. I just started using tangiers, three times to be exact. and well it is really kicking my ass. i have been smoking for a long time, about 4 years, and i think i have been defeated by the black goodness that comes out of a tangiers pouch. The stuff is incredible strong and i am not able to take more than a little puff without coughing like a little girl.

Here is my basic setup, please tell me if something is wrong:
pharonie hookah with ice in the base(noticed is was a little better with ice)
Phunnel bowl(have not tried it in standard bowl)
i poke 2 rings of holes areound the outside of the bowl and sometimes 1 in the middle
I use bulk coals, similar to hookah bar coals i guess, orange wood if it really matters.
i let my tobacco acclimate for about 4 hours shaking it every hour and when it started to smell right i covered it up.
i pack my bowl pretty loose and all the way to the rim
i then put about 4 pieces of coal along the outer edges ( medium to small sized chunks)
i take a few hits, feel light headed as heck then as the base starts filling up with more smoke it becomes really hard to hit without coughing up a lung
however if i take a coal off it becomes really thin smoke.

I havent tried mixing yet, mainly becuase im scared that two brands that are so different wont go good together.
If anyone has any good advice i would love to hear it.
Im starting to think that with every cough a little more wimpiness leaves my body, but i really want to enjoy the stuff becuase everyone talks so highly of it.
any help would be greatly appreciated
thanks

With Tangiers you want to pack it and I use little heat. Check out the link Stuie posted as well as some of the other howtos on Tangiers. It's tricky to get right sometimes at first, but once you do its nice

I personally have been packing like snoopy since i started, that seems to work best for me. Except my whole pattern is completely different. 4 rings of holes none over the center hole in a phunnel. In a standard bowl, holes all over.

is it harsh or just a big tickle, you may be using a little to much coal, try breaking smaller pieces or hang them off the edge of the bowl some.

your getting flavor though right?

also make sure you have something to drink while you smoke it, i can take a small hit of it and get a huge tickle that makes me cough like a 90 year old smoker but i take a little sip and its fine.

You can smoke in a standard bowl just don't pack it as tight as a phunnel. It's really nothing to it. That's how I started in Tangiers.

The only thing that made a huge difference for me was poking the holes all the way down to the bottom of the bowl; pack lots of that good stuff as well... It's death if you underpack smile.gif

ok i just smoked my first bowl that i actually enjoyed, i packed it tight like you guys all said and used less coals. i thought i was using too little of coals at first compared to what im used to using, but it smoked beautifully. it gives me a tingle in my throat but i kinda like it.
i think i still like my layalina more, called me old fashioned i guess lol. but im definately starting to get a feel for tangiers. i only have a few flavors so far but i think i will start buying more.
i put more holes also. i used the pattern thats in one of these threads with the 20 holes.
thank you guys so much for all your help and advice. im new to this forum but you guys have been very welcoming and helpful!!!!!
also horchata is surprisingly good.
thanks again everyone, and if you have any other advice that you think i should know please feel free to inform me!!

I got a question I usually get the rubbery taste from Tangiers, how do I get rid of that? should I pack it tighter? i usually over pack but never pack tightly since I over pack I usually just let the foil pack it down since I make the foil nice and tight and usually that makes it tighter...

I've never had a rubbery taste come from Tangiers. Pack it to where the tobacco sits fluffed up to 1/2" over the rim of the bowl, then pack it down.

like pack it down to the rim? ill squish the shit out of it!

no like fluff it like you would with normal tobacco that high and then push it down is what he is saying.

personally i find that smashing it that much is over kill for me. i just pull clump by clump out put it in the bowl and push it down some but not much but i am doing it in a mod bowl, i still dont pack to hard in a phunnel though, it is harder than any other shisha but not as hard as is suggested by many (heck i can even get fine results from totaly fluffing it, i think its really in the heat management)

Are you using a new hose or anything that may have a rubber taste to it?
