imonlyapuppet Posted February 8, 2006 Share Posted February 8, 2006 I often hear people say that they will use two coals for their hookah, placing a second on top of the first one before it dies. I guess you could smoke a hookah for an hour if you did it like that. However, after my one coal runs out, and I take off the metal charcoal screen, my shisha is black and charred, and sometimes stuck to the bottom of the screen. Shisha isn't supposed to burn like this, is it? I dont want to even bother putting a second coal on there and prolonging the smoke session because the shsisha seems "beat" at the end of only one coal. Is the shisha burning too hot? Brad Posted February 8, 2006 Share Posted February 8, 2006 What kind of coal are you using? Which brand of shisha? I usually use one round of coals on my bowl and the shisha is charred also. Though, the bottom of the shisha is still wet when I dump it out. I think as the session goes on, the heat goes deeper and deeper until ALL of the shisha is charred. mushrat Posted February 8, 2006 Share Posted February 8, 2006 The way *I* do it the Ma'asell shouldn't be sticking to the bottom of your screen or foil. try a little less ma'assel. Some folks fill the bowl, drop the foil right on top of the pile and plop their coals on that and say its great. These two schools of thought seem to have their supporters and both seem to work. As for when its done... Since you are really baking/vaporizing the ma'asell as a whole in the bowl, rather than burning it from the top, you should still be able to smoke it until its cooked through out. yashman19 Posted February 8, 2006 Share Posted February 8, 2006 If I used only one Nour finger coal, my session would only last 20 minutes, and towards the end of that coals life, the smoke would be really thing... When smoking, I have two nour finger coals on opposite sides of the bowl from each other. After about 10-15 minutes of smoking, I ash the two coals in the tray, and then when it comes time to put them back on the bowl, I rotate them to the other two sides of the bowl. Once I get them where I want them, I place an unlit coal ontop of the two lit ones. After about another 10-15 minutes, the unlit coal is now about halfway lit. And when the time comes to replace one of the original coals, the one I had going ontop of the two is now ready to replace the almost done coal. I just keep doing this for the whole session while I rotate the coals around the bowl. In a full session, I go through 4 Nour Finger coals, each one probably about 2.5-3" long pieces. This will give me a solid 1 hour to 1hour and 20-30 minute long session, with full heat the whole way through. But I also am one of those people who leaves a tiny gap between the top of my tobacco and the bottom of the foil. And at the end of my session, the tobacco is a hard, crispy, tobacco puck, similar to what you have seen. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

There is still shisha that is moist and unburned at the bottom of the bowl, so perhaps I can just add another coal and smoke for another twenty minutes or so. pavlakos_politakos Posted February 8, 2006 Share Posted February 8, 2006 i actually had a similar,unanswered question.i was hearing many people say things about "burning the moassel" but i wasnt sure if they meant burnt to a crisp when you lift the foil,or a burnt flavor.i guess everything was good because everyone seems to get a crispy chunk of moassel.i personally keep renewing the coals every time the old ones die out,until i cant get any flavor or blowing the smoke out from the bottom of the bowl isnt helping.
