What is reason behind certain shisha brands adding food coloring to their product? I have been reading reviews and some people ding points off if their shisha is colored...does it affect the taste? What brands aren't colored besides tangiers (preferably unwashed)

There are some of us that can taste the red dye. I myself can, my wife, and Kathrynx can also...and I am sure there are others.

No one has gotten a straight answer.

Some theories are: It hides an inferior or inconsistent tobacco stock. Helps with the flavor absorption by the tobacco. Some say that's how their flavorings come.

Red dye is one of the most common undiagnosed allergies. People rarely realize they are till they get a full allergy panel.

Tobaccos that typically don't have dye are:
Abed Elkader - Unwashed
Afzal - Unwashed
Al Waha - Unwashed
Epic - Washed
Fumari - Unwashed
Fusion - Unwashed
Hennawy - Unwashed
Hookah Freak - Unwashed
Hookah Hookah - Unwashed
Jewels - Washed
Nakhla - Unwashed
Romman - Unwashed
Saet Safa - Unwashed
Tangiers - Unwashed
Tembo - Washed

Could be wrong on the washed or unwashed part, but i am sure about the dye.

Im not sure about other flavors but five star is full of red dye.

Hrm, you sure? I've had two packs of five star, and both were uncolored. Unless they just started dyeing, which would be a damn shame...

AW mint is dyed green. All the other AW stuff I've seen isn't though if I remember correctly.

rarely is a whole line dyed...Fantasia has dye but if you grab pumpkin spice it's not.

Nakhla Cherry looks about as died as you can get. Everything else looks natural.

SB im not sure if they dye it purposely or if its the flavorings they get that are already colored, but the colors at least match the flavors some what (except blue myst is that natrualish color but what ever its sooooo good)

al waha i noticed its not colored but flavor to flavor it looks different some what, cola is dark, orange cream seems a little lighter kinda orange tone. maybe not "coloring" but its a little different

Yeah the lemon Saalam is the most delightful shade of neon yellow.

I can't think of any hookah tobaccos that aren't artificially colored on the US market. Old Bahraini isn't nor is Al Majlis...but not sold in the US. Lucid of course is washed and has no artificial color in it.

I read an article in the LA Times regarding artificial coloring like last week, talking about changes in behavior, and long lasting chronic effects in people from the consumption of artificial coloring. In many parts of Europe, they have banned artificial colors because of the risk to human health. Its not necessarily a trivial thing like we were raised to believe.

A better question...why use artificial colors...why does it matter?

Some companies use a yellow-brown color which is artificial, rather than a more obvious red-orange dye. Tobacco, uncolored, and processed with corn syrup (like the majority of brands in the US market are) has the color of wood. Lighter wood, slightly darker than white pine. Ooooh! About the color of the peanut butter in a Reese's Peanut butter cup, but lighter brown than actual in the jar peanut butter.

That orange flavor molecule is also found in oranges naturally. That class of chemical is an ester. They are volatile and are responsible for flavor and smell. Unlike colors, artificial and natural flavors (synthetic flavors) are made with the same chemicals found in fruits and plants and such. At least the stuff we use at Tangiers is.
