mushrat
So, to make things easier and because they apparently smoke differently due to different materials and quality, if you are asking for advice or input or help with a phunnel bowl, please specify if you have a chinese bowl or not. newjacksm
To be honest I ordered recently a new Tangiers bowl from HC and its reallllly different from my old Tangiers bowl im afraid it might be a chinese bowl. I dont know if the guys at Tangiers decided to change the way to make the bowls or changed people to make the bowls or not.
AKammenzind
Makes good sense. I've had a tangiers phunnel for a while, and my buddy just ordered a chinese phunnel so I'm looking forward to comparing them when his gets in. From what I've heard they're pretty different though, so it would make sense to differentiate, esp. if heat management is different.
Bulldog_916
If it feels like grout on the inside, it's genuine.
newjacksm
I dont know what grout feels like so I cant really compare... But A lot of people who bought new funnel bowls say that there is a big difference between them(old bowls and new) I wish that we can get some confirmation from some one who works at Tangiers..... So we can stop second guessing whether were getting fakes in or not. Edited November 10, 2008 by newjacksm

slingham
I bought one from a local shop in Anaheim an I can't tell if its genuine or tangiers. It looks like the tangiers online, it has the rough texture on the inside. But I some people were saying you could only buy Tangiers online so I don't know. I like how it smokes so I'm happy at least.
SuburbanSmoker
i have both and let me say you can tell the chinese ones are def chinese.First off, the chinese seem to be alot thinner. The inside feels like fresh concrete which is kinda strange and i get worried sometimes its going to fall off the hookah. Also, for what ever reason when i smoke using my chinese phunnel the bowl seems to get really really hot, and is a pain in the ass to manage the heat on it. def sticking with my tangiers bowls. mushrat
Tangiers does supply them to regular shops as well.HC also sells the chinese as well as the REAL tangiers phunnels. So you could have gotten eithe rone. I believe HC actually has a seperate listing for each so you know what you are ordering.
rigor
The Chinese ones have a smooth texture on the inside, which is pretty easy to identify, as every authentic Tangiers I've ever looked at, has the rougher grout texture inside. I ordered 2 of the 'new' Tangiers phunnels that came back in stock most places about 4 weeks ago. Both the small and medium I ordered have a higher center hole than my older phunnel. It kind of sucks, cause I actually pull my foil very tight when I pack, and it is *still* sometimes getting stuck in the center once I've been rotating coals - and that's with HD foil too. My older Tangiers small has a noticeable lower center hole... it's perfect. I'm thinking about grinding down the center hole on the new ones, but worried about it losing its nice look and glazed finish.
Click
Here is what the inside of the Chinese Phunnel looks like. Smooth compared to the Tangiers Phunnel.

JillyIsJustKidding
Idk what to say about the Chinese phunnels.I ordered a small blue one from H-C last week. First thing I noticed...I saw that it came with a black grommet so I was like "Oh awesome. Now I have a grommet that fits with it"I then realized that this black rubber grommet smells really bad. Like nasty ass rubber bad.The thing is, this grommet came intact in the phunnel (the hole where the base of the phunnel meets the stem of the hookah). I then realized that the smell got into the inside of the phunnel! Pleh! I didnt notice that until the first time I used the bowl (and I did clean it b4 hand mind you )I let the bowl soak overnight in a mixture of lemon juice, dish washing soap, and warm water. smell was still there!Eck i thought that maybe if I smoked more bowls out of it, it would go away.I guess its starting to work since I smoked another bowl of H-H out of it. The rubber smell is starting to go away. The only thing I REALLy do not like about these knockoffs is the inner ridge of the bottom. It makes the bowl a bitch to fully clean and dry. But, I kinda like how much faster it heats up compared to the original. I usually have to wait about 5 mins for the bowl to warm up with a windscreen while it takes a mere few minutes with the windscreen while using the chinese bowl to smoke to its full potential.I don't think heat management with these bowls are a big prob like people have been saying. Just go easy on the coals and your good to go

Well in this case, anything bowl that is dyed a certain color that we smoke lmao.LMAO I know this because my university was handing out free water bottle carrier thingys to promote this concert thing that have every year.I noticed a sticker on the bottom that said..:"California Proposition 65 Warning. All drinkware with colored decoration on the exterior contain Lead. Lead Compounds and/or Cadmium are Known to the State of California to cause Cancer or Birth Defects or Other Reproductive Harm"Its kinda like saying "Oh here's a free campus water bottle! Oh By the way...It has LEAD in it! Have a nice day "lmaoArgh Idk what damn thread I read on here, someone said that certain color dyes on bowls contain lead. So basically, you can't judge, saying that every chinese phunnel is the only bowl that contains lead since basically many mainstream bowls are dyedBTW to stay on topic...Imo, I think these bowls smoke just the same. pssh I snagged it since it was $5 cheaper. Hey, I'm broke and I need to save up all the money that I can Edited November 11, 2008 by JillyIsJustKidding
Sonthert
Hello friends; We have not changed the basic design of the phunnels in awhile. The phunnel height shrunk down a little (since they are handmade) and then I made the guy make them a little taller. Other than that, its the same. All the clay and glazes we use for Tangiers Phunnels are certified non-toxic (and dishwasher safe...if the spirit ever moves you) including lead free. All the glazes we use are boron-based slip glazes rather than lead-based...The fake phunnels tend to be thinner material and it has more "clutter" or blobby pieces of clay since they are cast and not hand thrown. The fake phunnels feel more like plaster to me (although they are clay) whereas the real phunnels feel more stoney. Since we use high-fired clay, it conducts heat better so real phunnels consume less charcoal (I estimated the fake phunnel used about 20%-30% more coal to get the same effect). So that extra five bucks you save will get eaten up in more charcoal use in a week or two (depending how much you smoke). That is, a fairly closely sized real and fake phunnel (about a medium...) The Tangiers phunnel, using Tangiers tobacco, the fake one produced less smoke with four coals on the fake vs. four coals on the real one. This makes sense because lower-fire clay is heated less so it vitrifies less (vitrification is where heated molecules rub and mix vigorously and then when cooled shrink and becomes more dense...the more vitrifed it is, the more dense it is), so it would have more tiny air bubbles in a low-fired clay, where a higher fired clay drives those out. Air is a poor conductor of heat (since it is very diffuse), so the more air bubbles, the worse a conductor of heat the clay would be and then the more heat it takes to heat up. So a lower fired clay is cheaper to make (it takes less energy nd uses less clay since the clay shrinks less), but it would inevitably be less sturdy, lighter, and use more charcoal.Or thats what I read on the back of a bar napkin. Edit: Rubber that smells that way is because of excesses of sulfur, generally. It should be safe...although it might taint flavor and still smell bad. newjacksm
Thanks! Although there is a little difference with my 2 small bowls but it isnt a Chinese bowl I know that for a fact (main reason I have 2 small bowls is because my old one isn't glazed all the way and I am afraid to smoke with it) Edited November 11, 2008 by newjacksm
Bulldog_916
Dont be afraid to smoke with it. All you need to be concerned about is the cleaning of the exposed part. Other than that, no reason why you cant use it.

Bulldog_916
Yea, that's what I mean. It's not a problem. Some Egyptian bowls are exposed like that for people who dont like smoking from glazed surfaces. Example:http://hookahcompany.com/colored_saudi_hoo...d_2637_prd1.htmIt doesnt mean the bowl is made any worse. It just means that cleaning will be a bit more time-consuming.
