indian_villager
So people as some of you know I am studying Chemical Engineering. And I was just offered a Co-Op position with Schearing-Plough. The want me to do like 35hrs/week next semester. My interview is on Friday (wish me luck). So I will be limited to taking like a class or two for that entire semester and graduation may be pushed back a semester. The benefits are: Easier to get hired when you have experience, Possibility of a higher starting salary once I graduate with the experience. The Co-Op will earn me about 6 credits and I may be able to squeeze in like three or four more. But the schedule I already have picked out for next semester is jam packed with 19 credits. So what to do people? Edited November 11, 2008 by indian_villager
Giant Ninja Robot
IV, take the job my friend Congrats on being chosen. As long as you have the drive to keep on with school which it seems you do, it will NOT hurt to already have your foot in the door of your chosen career field, especially as a college degree doesn't really guarantee you a position these days. Sounds like a win win as you'll be getting the hands on experience, college credit, I'm assuming pay for 35 hrs a week, and 6 months tacked on to your graduation time could be well worth a jump in pay and a higher chance of landing the position you want straight out of the gate. Look at it this way, a little extra time spent in school for a potentially large reaping after the fact. Investment my friend. And if you don't become the next Eric since you two share the same major and passion for hookah I might come find you and punch your nose. staygone
I'd go for the internship if you don't mind being "stuck" in school for another semester. First things first though, Schering, not schearing . -QM

ryno
With the way the job market is right now, I'd do the co-op.

It's all up to you to put your priorities in the correct order and hope that you made the right decision. What exactly is this Co-Op and what do you do in it? coplinb
If you get it, take the job. You will def. open some doors with the experience and EVERY employer looks at that, no matter how long you went to college for. Its amazing that people spend so much $ on an good education but employers want more on the job experience! So, its one semester and yes I think you will regret it if you dont. You dont want to pass it up and then apply for a job and not get it when you graduate thinking you could have got it if you took the co-op. Good Luck! Bulldog_916
I'm having the same dilemma but with a pay job and a different town about 300 miles away from here. I'm going to interview there on Monday. If I get the job, I'll have to quit school. This is what I went to school for in the first place, a well-paying job. So, we'll see where it goes after the interview.
