Advice For College Hookah Smokers...

Recommended Posts

Ok so i smoke in the dorm because im too lazy to go outside and i enjoy blowing o rings.... I know its illegal but whatever. People don't understand that hookah can't really start a fire... and they just react huge on the fact that the smoke is alot larger and more visible... So my question is how do you guys keep the smoke/smell from getting out the room? I cover the bottom with towels and stuff but it's still smellable... Is there an airfilter i could buy possibly?

you could get a toilet paper roll and put a couple of dryer sheets in it. Then just blow through it. we used to do it when we were in the dorms. give it a shot

found it, not burn down but "torched" six rooms

QUOTE
Nearly a week after a fire torched six rooms in the Santa Rosa Residence Hall, authorities are still deciding how to deal with the damages and consequences of the blaze.

Details of the event are beginning to emerge as the University of California Police Dept., the Campus Fire Marshal and Housing & Residential Services conduct inquiries into the residence hall fire. The fire - which was reported at 3:30 a.m. on May 30 and burned for over four hours - was likely started by discarded hookah coals, allegedly left on a second-story windowsill.
...
According to UCPD Public Information Officer Matt Bowman, the individuals living in the room connected to the hookah coals are under investigation for their actions but are not facing any charges at the moment.

“At this point, we are not ruling anything out, including that [the] actions were not criminal,” Bowman said. “This is America, and people are innocent until proven guilty. As far as we’re concerned, he hasn’t done anything unlawful pending the conclusion of our investigation.”

However, Bowman noted there may be one immediate charge for the students that allegedly caused the fire: smoking in the dorms.

“One thing worth mentioning, it is unlawful to smoke in the Res Halls,” Bowman said. “In addition to housing consequences, the police have been called in to intervene. There is a joint investigation taking place involving the Santa Barbara Fire Dept., the Campus Fire Marshal’s office and our office.”

Meanwhile, according to Brown, the students who allegedly started the fire will be subject to a two-part investigation process - one conducted by H&RS and another by the UCSB administration.

I'm not saying that you shouldn't smoke, I'm saying that you shouldn't believe that you cant start a fire with a hookah.

Ive heard of people smoking in the bathroom with the exhaust fan on. Or having a fan blowing out a open window

Yes, yes it can. And does. Frequently.

It's not as hazardous as, say, making napalm your bathroom... but yeah. Raise your hand if you haven't accidentally burned something while smoking hookah.

I really doubt that anyone would notice... hookah smoke doesn't smell like smoke. Edited by gaia.plateau

+1

and any smoke smell would probably be more like fruit incense or faint febrese, not really like tobacco burning or cigarettes.

and yes, you defiantly can burn shit down and light it on fire, i almost set my table on fire when a coal fell off 2 weeks ago (i was really drunk and didn't notice unitl i could smell the wood burning)

Well while I will agree that hookah coals have the potential to cause fires they don't do it frequently. Simply because of all the safety precautions built into materials today most stuff will just melt/smolder.

But with that said I'll +1 the comment

and hookah smoke doesn't smell like smoke but the coals can make it smell like something is on fire (because something is lol)

tongue.gif what part of melting/smoldering/burning do you disassociate from fire? tongue.gif

My last place had over two dozen carpet burns and I only lived there for 6 months, haha. And let's not forget about the time JD exploded his kitchen... ohmy.gif

If its allowed try lighting incense, or having an incense ready and if anyone asks what the smell is say you had one lit earlier.

if its not allowed it may still be worth having one around because you will probably get in less trouble for incense than for smoking in rooms as people usually dont understand shisha

When I was a noob at hookah, I put a "spent" coal into my trashcan and left the room for 5 minutes. Came back and smelled something like melted plastic, look at my trashcan, and there's a nice little hole going through all of my trash and through the bottom and burned my carpet. Thing is nothing was actually on fire.

Have any of yall actually had something seriously catch fire because of a coal?

I smoked a lot in my dorm room. It eventually was called "club 1805", that's how much we drank/smoked in that place. Since there is no odor (unpleasant anyways), I really didn't have any issues as long as you don't climb up on a ladder and blow into the fire alarm. If you were not aware, most cheap fire alarms (like ones in dorms) are activiated by heat and smoke, and won't go off on cool smoke alone such as the kind that you exhale.

However, my roommate started smoking who was a paranoid engineer. So he covered the fire alarms and put towels around the bottom of the door that serves as the exit out of the apartment.

We smoked a lot*. I have never found hooka that hit as hard as that beast. We'd be walking around in a cloud by the end of the night, all 3 hoses pumping. No windows, no problems. Edited by sahtt

I thought you technically couldn't have any live flame/tobacco/etc in the dorms. In either case, be careful to not burn your carpet. Get a mat/rug, or something on the bottom of the shisha to safeguard from those burns. AS for the smoke, it probably wont be an issue with a towel on the floor, and maybe a window open.

people do drink and smoke things in dorms anyways. Just cover your bases, casue some people don't really understand what a hookah is.

open window, fan by the door blowing toward the window, fan at window, moist towel at base of door(if you wanna go the extra mile, duct tape the door all around with towel at bottom), and a bag over the fire detector-a-ma-bobber

should do it

edit: situation resolved

i went to ucsb and i saw first hand the dangers of smoking in a dorm room. those rooms were toasted and the kids families had to pay for the repairs. i still smoked in my room once in a while though lol. we just covered up the fire alarm with a trash bag and put a towel on the bottom of the door. we used a fan sometimes with a window open. only advice i can say is make sure when someone goes in and out of the room they do it fast so you dont get caught by the RA's

and the dryer sheets tube idea is a bad idea because then you are associating your hookah with nht if you get busted...I'm not gonna explain the connection, except to the mods + mushrat in my !report

the bag over the thinga-a-ma-bobber is a federal offence. You can be expelled if caught in many schools. Just a friendly heads up.
Anythign that interferes with a smoke detector is not a good idea.

Ive never had a smoke detector go off due to hookah...however I have started a fire with a hookah coal in my room(not my dorm). An exhaust fan works well. BUT why not go outside and smoke? Its easier, safer, and is actually a good way to meet girls/other people.

And at UMD, you can pretty much be put on probation for anything that generates more heat than your computer. Not even halogen lamps are allowed (but they do get damn hot).

Good advice. Rather than going out of your way to hide what you're doing, find a bench outside the dorm and set up there.
