Coal Rant

Recommended Posts

DO NOT EVER BUY STARGATE COALS! NEVER EVER EVER!

I am not even remotely happy with these things. About to go buy some Exoticas because the coals I have now suck. I'm using the last of my HC coconut coals because I hate Stargates so much. Never have I been this pissed about coals. Even the Rolland natural coals were better than these things in EVERY way.

I know this forum is like the hub central for Coconara fans, but even those are better than Stargates.

Ugh.

Now, to go back out and start my Tangiers bowl finally!

Sorry to rant, just had to get it out.

Are you talking about Stargate makes a lot of varieties of coals. Which one are you addressing here?

why would you insult coconaras and your intelligence when trying to defend something lol?

I would honestly argue that 1) your spell check is on vacation and 2) Exoticas are better than cocoas (especially when it comes to tangiers)

i duno why cocos are so popular on this forum, but 3 cocos can never get my phunnel bowl started with thick smoke. I have to use 4 cocos to get it started and then it gets harsh in about 20 mins of smoking.... with exoticas i just use one brick and brick into twos and im good for one hour of perfect thick smoke no harshness.

It's called a windcover.

I never need more than 2 Cocos for a phunnel of Tangiers, for full smoke. 3 for AF or a wet & washed tobacco.

+1 Windcovers are so helpful with heat management. I rarely smoke without using a windcover during some point in a session. I use coconaras, Nours, Diamante, Abu Haithem, and 3 King's Coals. My two favorites are Nours and Coco's. 2 cocos to start with, then I add a small Nour piece to finish the bowl off. I do wish coco's were cheaper. I buy them for 12.99 locally per box of 84. Nours for $3.99 for a kilo box. Edited by MrMoodz

Lol fair enough glad you were a good sport about it.

Really, my exoticas rarely fall apart on me. Not to say it never happens, but it's rare.

At the same time the cocos (I find)
1) Put off a ton of heat (which isn't a bad thing just different)
2) the sides burn "out" to fast (so they go black and need to be flipped)
3) Weird thing is, they put out more heat but for some reason I don't get a warm tasty smoke (with tangiers)
- It's a cooled off smoke and I think that the flavor is dampened by the coals for some reason. Where as I can slap on 2 or 3 (1/4s) of exoticas (same bowl) and get my full tasty white smoke with no "off taste"

But I will say I don't have a problem with cocos on other brands like fantasia (usually, sometimes they cause an issue)

Yeah exoticas break apart way too easily. The first time I touch them after putting them on the coil stove they fall apart.

Well I wouldn't say mine do that all the time but I have noticed the new ones are a lot less dense than the old ones.

The old ones took some sawing and a hammer tap or two BUT now I can just break them by hand no problem.

Hopefully they'll switch back.

1. you can ignore anything jewdin says (drabin. jewdin is short for jewish dan)

2. i had two boxes of exoticas that just constantly fell apart. i got uber pissed at them, then finally hit a good box... i'm finding that their humidty at which they are kept matters a TON. i now keep them on a table not far from my dehumidifier in my basement and they do much better.

3. i honestly dont care if i'm using exotica/coco/starlights/nours/whatever natural. i dont notice a taste with any 'premium' natural coal and if you konw the heat with them then there should not be a problem regardless

I've never had exoticas treat me like these pieces of garbage do. I'm talking about the natural sticks of Stargate. I didnt know there was any other form.

I'd rather use quicklights than Stargates from now on.

I'm gonna pick up another box of Exoticas. If they do the same thing, I'll have to go find myself somewhere else. Hopefully by then I can order up some other coals that arent Coconaras. Like, I dunno, maybe more of the HC coconut coals or starlights... perhaps even easy-lites.

I dont like Coconaras because they are raping the customer for a product that obviously has its own issues. Drop the price and we would likely be telling a different story. I felt like my dollar went WAY further with the Abu Haitham coconut coals. Edited by Bulldog_916

I like exoticas more than cocos, too. Heat management seems easier the way I do it. To each his own, though.

Incidentally, it could just be a fluke, but I've found that if you heat up the exoticas more slowly/gently, i.e., using a much lower setting on your stove, they tend to not split apart so frequently. That makes them take a few minutes longer to get ready, but it's not that big of a deal.

My observation about heating them more slowly and evenly above actually makes sense adding to what SixPackSunday said about humidity...if they have a higher moisture content, and you heat them very rapidly, they would be far more likely to crack and split.
