Brass Or Nickel Stem?

Recommended Posts

hi there guys,
im new around the foroum
morethanthat im interested in buying an oldfashioned egypt-turkish style nargile hookah myself

have any of you , of the most traditional users, an opinion upon which kind of stem to choose??
Brass or Nickel made?
im just asking couse i ve heard that the ones that are made from brass can actually couse some short of infection , allergic reaction in the lungs.
i know what most of u will say....i WAS too, once, a heavy cigarete smoker for at least 14years.... i know brass rationaly should be the last thing i should worry about... but im currently trying to keep it on the right side as much as i can!!

anybody has any clue about this issue?? huh.gif

never heard of anything give an infection due to the metal when it comes to hookahs.

now if the metal is touching your skin (i.e. a ring's inner band) you will get infections if you use anything of lower value than silver (easier to say value than try and list either side of the metals list), except maybe anodized aluminum.

as to what stem material is better, i personally would probably go with brass since it doesnt corrode or patina very quickly, and i honestly dont think many if any stems are made from solid nickel, just from a cost stand point

I know of nickel to give me rashes on the skin, but I dont know about the lungs. As for brass, well alot of good hookahs are made of brass, including KM (correct me if Im wrong)

basically every one will get a reaction with it on the skin, its just not a great material for that

Nickel/Chrome plated stems will last longer in terms of rust/oxidation compared to brass stems, but brass stems are heavier and more solid.

Examples are Nour Syrians (all brass) and Mya hookahs (most models nickel/chrome plated)

but the myas are chrome plated brass AFAIK

Yeah I know, that's why I say plated. I've never seen a hookah made of just nickel. Maybe they don't rust or oxidize? That'd be cool. The inside of my mya always had dark green coming out with each wash.

naw nickel would corrode just kinda slower, nickel plating i have lost all faith in, most paintball gear that is bright silver is a nickel plating and the stuff chips for no reason, one of my guns has nickel on it and even with annal retentive care its chipping and its only 5 years old and not used a lot

chrome on the other hand as long as its done well is stronger and doesnt corrode

but cheap chroming will chip just as bad, and no matter the plating if you are able to scrape through it (chrome is very hard to do so because it is a very hard material) the under laying metal will corrode and let go of the plating
