peterjmag
After reading good things about the HC coconut coals, I bought my first box a couple of months ago. I was impressed with them (especially once I got used to how they worked, how often to flip, etc) for the most part, so I finished off the box and ordered two more. I noticed some minor issues with the first of these boxes, but nothing too serious. I just started using the second box recently though, and I'm not impressed. It seems like the coals are actually less dense than my first box. Sometimes, they will spontaneously split horizontally in half while lighting (which you don't realize until you pick them up to put them on the bowl), they seem to burn faster than they used to (and it's easier to accidentally burn the tobacco than before), and the ash that comes off of them is a different quality.Has anyone noticed any of these issues with the HC cocos? I'm on the verge of switching back to using Exoticas (which are good coals, but they're a serious bitch to break into appropriately-sized pieces). If the next box of cocos that I order isn't any better, I'll probably do just that. Edited November 17, 2008 by peterjmag
mushrat
Don't excited about exoticas, my last CASE has been soft, fast burning, and not as good as THEY used to be either.Lets face it folks. It's not like there is a lot of money to be made in the charcoal business for hookahs. As I've stated before, many charcoal companies make a good product for a while, then once they have established a name...they let the quality slip. Put less materials into the coal so they make just a little bit more when they sell them.I guess we just have to get used to it.
peterjmag
Hell, maybe I should just switch back to Quicklites... *shudder* At least those were consistent for the year or two that I used them.
Hippo_Master
Mine still kick ass, i got mine from TheHookah. The Exoticas I have last about 28 minutes for 1/4 a stick. At least they don't have a taste and get cheaper on shipping each month... I still prefer Al Awa'el to anything though.
OC4111
Try Starlight cocomut coals from MNH. Almost half the price of coconaras and last just about as long. Or the coals that Hookah John sells on his site. Edited November 17, 2008 by OC4111

MrMoodz
Coconara, Nour, 3 Kings, and Abu Haithum or a similar kind of Japanese quick lights are the ones I use most. 3 Kings when I'm taking the hookah somewhere and smoking outside. Coconaras when I'm at home. 2 coco's for the first half of the session, then I light up a piece of Nour or Japanese quick light to keep the bowl going. Add in a wind cover for extra heat management... and that's my routine.

CH has the best quiklites period. i want to try starlights i hear really good things. but for now i am a coconara guy.

The only down side is that they seem to burn quite a bit hotter than any other coal I have. Putting 2 on a Mya bowl chars the tin foil around the holes. None of my other coals (Cocos, Diamante Japs, 3 Kings, CH Cocos) char the foil.

Canaries are nice but too expensive to use in the bar.easy lites suck and exotica japs are not as good as tehe canaries and still cost too much to use in the quantity of coal we go through. Voski
Mush what do you use personally then? I had no problem with exoticas until I got 3 or so boxes of super bad ones. Now I am almost out of cocos and I am to broke for those =(
mattarios2
HC coals now suck, same w/ my recent exotica box that mush has already mentioned, cocos are eh decent, had good and bad luck with them and they are expensive, I personally like easy lites, and am waiting to test out the canarys I purchased, I most likely will be sticking with canarys as they seem to be consistently good coals, I don't mind expensive if they stay consistent and are always providing a good smoke.Easy lites for short sessions (cheap)Golden Canarys for longer sessions (expensive)
