Hookah Delivers Carbon Monoxide Equivalent of a Pack of Cigarettes
January 4, 2008

An hour spent smoking a hookah, or water pipe, delivers as much carbon monoxide to the user as smoking a pack of cigarettes, HealthDay News reported Jan 3.

Hookah smoking has become a popular alternative to cigarette smoking in recent years, particularly among college students, but, "This is not the risk-free activity they think it is," said study co-author S. Katherine Hammond of the University of California at Berkeley.

Hammond's study only looked at carbon monoxide, not other hazards of smoking. But Thomas Eissenberg of Virginia Commonwealth University, who also has studied hookah use, said smoking a water pipe for 46 minutes produces 36 times more tar than smoking a cigarette for five minutes. And smoking tobacco through hookahs, like cigarettes, can be addictive.

Hammond's findings were published in a letter in the Jan. 2, 2008 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association.

I'll have to say that I don't see hookah as being addictive. It's a fun activity, but not something that I 'have' to do. I mean seriously, if I lost my hookah I'd be sad (OMG Money down the draaain) but I wouldn't go into withdrawls or anything.

this is an extremely true but hidden fact about the hookah world.

i know other lounge owners have ran into this problem. have you ever seen someone pass out at a hookah bar? that is from CO poisoning.

we had one girl go down once and the fire truck came. they took out the CO measuring device and found that the CO levels were extremely unsafe, but there was nothing to do about it because we were.. well.. dealing with smoke (CO).

I think we as a forum, should try and design some sort of experiment to disprove this whole tar and nicotine thing. ya there is tar and nicotine but we should prove to these "professors" and "doctors" that its not as bad as they say. I mean if we had a test to not only prove the real amounts but show that their tests were illegitimately performed i think we could help out the hookah community.

I think comparing hookah to cigs is just plain stupid. It obviously bad for you (anything other than air in your lungs is) but still... It's a completely different method of delivery. But I can imagine that a person could get CO poisoning from it.

how can you not see the potential of hookah being addictive?
as long as there is nicotine involved, there is a chance for addiction. sure, the nicotine levels in hookah tobacco is relatively low for some brands but everyone has a different genetic make up so some people are more prone to addiction than others.

i dont think the comparison is stupid. both deal with tobacco but the comparison is made because of the difference in delivery.

As much as I want hookah to be "healthier" in studies I know its still tobacco. Ray we wish it was no comparison but thats just ignorance.

Gah..only if we had a more precise study on this subject, or rather hookah smoking as a whole.

As for addictiveness..I can easily say that I am not addicted. The longest I have gone with out thinking/smoking a hookah was 5 days.

It never even crossed my mind during those 5 days. Then the weekend came, and we chilled and smoked.
