Nowhere do I see any mention of grammar... I know that's what you're implying. But for me, following basic grammar and orthography is part of maintaining "a civil manner and tone". Paying attention to *how* you write just shows that you respect the people that will read your topic. I know it's not open for discussion but at the same time you're basically condoning atrocious spelling and incomprehensible grammar. And the fall of the Western civilization as we know it.

wow. that's a little severe, bro.

what's sad is that people on this forum (especially lately) forget basic manners to the point where Mushrat has to get involved and clean out the "bullies." this forum is supposed to be an accepting, friendly place to post. Mushrat is just trying to keep it that way.

so what if a guy can't spell? so what if someone doesn't know the correct grammar? it's an honest mistake. it's not offensive. raggin' on a guy for spelling and stuff IS offensive.

here's simpler way to put it, for those who don't get the point:

DON'T BE A JERK.

i'm sure everyone here can agree with that. and if courtesy and politeness will bring the "fall of the Western civilization," then so be it.

Tired of people just posting to make fun of someones spelling, syntax, grammar, or choice of words...

Read rule #1 again.

The vacations will begin.

Agree 100%

It's just not cool, people seem to forget that we have really crappy schools, and some people never learned proper grammer, myself included. Also do not forget that we live in a world of contractions (which I have seen everyone use, and if you want to get technical about it, your not using proper grammer there either), syntax, and just plain weird made up words and spelling techniques.

As for the fall of western civilization, come on man, do remember that english is a bastard language anyway. Rome would not allow the celtic tribes of england to learn latin, so the roman legions that were stationed there were only allowed to speak french. The celtic tribes, however, spoke a germanic language. What happened? The two languages (germanic and french) were mixed and we got english. From there we get a huge diversity of dialects of the english language. If anything our generation is just advancing the english language and making it more efficient (which does occur over time, look at old english, middle english, and modern english).

Get off your high thrones about grammer. Just cause you know what words to use in a certain context does not make you a better person or give you a "grammer licence" to put some one down about not knowing. Spelling comes naturally for some people, if your like me, and born without that part of the brain, its a real bitch.

Some people (like me) dont CARE about there, their, they're. It is spoken the same, you know what we mean, dont be a jerk about it.

Like stated before this place should be about friendship, and helping people out. Not making people feel not welcome just cause they dont use proper grammer/spelling techniques.

We're not condoning atrocious grammar and spelling, we are accepting it. Lets face it, I can't spell to save my life and I have a Bloody Master's Degree. My typing isn't much better. I think its time for the language to evolve some more where it gets simpler. I before e except after c, what kinda BS is that??

The important part is communication of ideas, and if i can type wate instead of weight or wait and you still understand, why make it harder?

Actually, I have a mostly Southern accent...picture sherrif Beuford.

Besides...if your idea of fun is making fun of other people..you need to re-examin your own self. pirate.png

The whole fall of western civilization thing... with a ninja smilie after it. Yeah, you might want to re-read it. I hope that at least the OP understood the humorous character of that last phrase.

I don't think you get the point I was making. Most of the posts that really make me want to flame a guy are posted by native English speakers who are using msn-English. I actually think that the non-native speakers' posts are easier on the eyes (and oftentimes also on the brain) than those coming from North American IPs.

I'll agree with you on the "don't be a jerk clause"; it is, after all, a hookah forum, not a grammar nazi hideout. And, having individuals that come from all walks of life and social backgrounds, it's only natural that everyone has to make some personal concessions.

Thank Jove, at least one person that didn't address the 'fall of western civilization' phrase.
Ditto on the randomness of English spelling though! It's not as bad as French and let's hope it never will be.

Ditto to that man, I thought i was rather up on my french. Last time I was in Quebec I thought all french speakers learned a new language.

Mush its obvious. People have a tendancy to be dicks its like almost a natural thing. i know i do the same thing but i will be the first person to admit my faults and never knock another person for their grammar. Thanks for this it makes me feel better because i always try and fix my posts for fear i will be devoured by other members that think they are better because they have proper english on a forum.

Well, PERSONALLY, I want to understand what a person is saying. If their grammar and syntax are atrocious, I'm not going to understand the point as well as if they had typed it up better. Now, the 2nd language clause works, I understand that. I just dont want to have to find the point in 10 mins of looking for it. A couple of spelling or syntax errors, no problem. But if it interferes with my ability to understand what's being said, that's a problem. Sorry, but it just is.

I swear boy when I get you home I'm gonna punch yo momma!

The problem with this forum, mostly, is that a lot of the grammer brigade seem
to quickly forget that english is not everyone's first language.

Thank you for getting the refrence. cool.gif

If you can't understand soemone because of their lousy spelling or grammar, then don't reply. If enough people can't understand it and they get to replies, then they may decide to fix the problem themselves.

GOGO mushy, i really dont like grammar nazis.

im dyslexic mine is TERRIBLE but i have a degree,a masters (in one month), ccna and ccnp (in 1 month also) and im probably about to start a PHD, i find too many people looking down on those who cant spell very well on forums especially considering i would never look down on someone for being less educated it would be the same thing.

then there are those who are not natural english speakers they cant be expected to spell perfectly.

Is this really such a big problem though? I mean, I think I've seen this maybe three times in the past year.

I'd say it's more along the lines of Constructive Criticism.

How else would one learn? Mixing "their" and "there" will get you an Automatic F from a good professor. smile.gif

We're here to talk about hookah arent we? Not about our upcoming english quiz..
