cpoteet
Ok, now two rooms in my apt have burnt carpet from dropped coals. That means I get to re-carpet two rooms...great.I need another solution to both manage my coals and to protect the environment around me from hookah falling over, etc. Also, these quick lighting coals kind of suck. I don't have an open flame, but I would like something else. Suggestions? Edited November 21, 2008 by cpoteet
inino
probably something like coconaras. as far as hookahs falling over, they really shouldnt unless people pull on it too hard or something. maybe put a towel or a rug under it. so if coals fall they can burn the towel or rug and you can pick them off before they burn the carpet. jezter6
1) $10 coil burner from walgreens. solves your lighting problems and you can use naturals2) Get a fricking carpet. I bought a nice oriental style rug at IKEA for like $60 - saves a few hundred in fixing carpet in a few rooms3) Either get a smaller hookah, or stop knocking it over. Really, that should not happen. You could also fabricate some sort of stand to hold the hookah. I've heard putting it in a bucket filled with ice would help - keeps the vase water cold and is bigger/harder to tip. Canon
i burned up my wifes carpet good, you get the burn out by cutting it at a 90 degree angle with scissors and then cuttint out the small black beads that form because of that. either that or cut off a piece of carpet from a closet or somewhere that will never be noticed and replace a small square
anathema
simply double up a beach towel, place it under your hookah if you're dropping coals.
Majid
Use a windcover or make your own out of lots of layers of tin foil. Just wrap lots of layers of foil around a bottle or anyting round thats thick enough, then use some electrical tape or paperclips on the sides to keep everything in place. If you make one that sits higher than the coals by about 2 inches, it'll stop your coals from falling off, they'll just land on the tray or stay on the bowl when they shift. If you do make one, make sure to poke some airholes on the side of it so the air can circulate.

If you use small pieces just on the edge it'll be fine.

In my old apartment I burned the crap out of the floor and I know better. I have one 'burn/melt' spot on my rug, but at least it's not the actual house carpet that's screwed up. You can barely see the burn/melt - only feel it when you slide your foot across. And I could turn the rug another direction to hide it if I really needed to. mbeck
You could always try one of those Electric "coals" they sell online. I think smokinghookah.com carries them. Not sure how well they work, but at least they wont fall off and burn your carpet. Also, a while ago we started using a large metal tray under the hookah because most of the coal droppage occurs when the coal is being moved around with tongs.Hope this help.Regards,MikeHookah Life

Invest in one and you won't be sorry. Also, if you could buy a larger coal tray that would help too... along with a windcover.

no longer welcome
cardboard boxes or rugs get ruined as well. Try like mentioned above a ;arge cooking sheet, or get a large piece of tile somewhere, it'll look better, and rest your hookah on top of that. liquidglass
QUOTE (indian_villager @ Nov 22 2008, 10:14 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>Better the box than a carpet in an apartment!HEll yes I've used this one beforeright now I use a beach towel (that I don't care about) and a 3' x 2" carpet until I find something better. Big rubber mat would work wonders if you can get your hands on one, nothing smells good burning, but the rubber is durable enough to take it and I think I heard about some fire retardant spray on stuff somewhere. Last but not least I put my 32" KM into a coleman cooler with water/ice it's saved my ass so many times when coals fall off they land in the water, sizzle and I can keep smoking, also the best thing is you can RELIGHT THE COALS that's right you can light them again. *Veritas*
Im not diggin the Cardboard box idea to much. at least rugs are some what flame retardant. I could see a box having a coal dropped on it and igniting rather quickly compared to a rug.you may Go from a hole in your carpet to a hole were your house used to be. lol Just my .2 cents
Kapten Kanel
I have never understod why so many people in the states uses wall-to-wall (not sure what its called in english) carpet, but i can tell you guys its alot better to get burn marks on a carpet than a wooden floor... *looks down on the floor beside the hookah*
