hookah is an ongoing trial and error. sometime i have what i think are the perfect ways to prepare everything then i will mix things up. there is no 1 right way to do this. just keep practicing and take all the tips you have heard. you'll get your own style shortly.

i dont know what some people are talking about. people puff on cigars and cigarettes. if you puffed the way you puff one of those on the hookah, freakn nothing would happen.
you're supposed to inhale the hookah smoke as if your practically breathing. that's why special hoses are thick, so you can take in and inhale a lot of air with one hit.
you know those little things people put on the mouth end of their cigarette so it doesn't touch their lips? that thing has such a small gap for air to come in. you cannot inhale air from one of those and you weren't meant to inhale those.
and if you tried to inhale the smoke from a cigar or cigarette the way you do a hookah, those would be gone in like 3 hits.

fill your lungs up to the brim with the hookah goodness. take the biggest slow rips that you can, and dotn breathe in air from your nose or the sides of your mouth, if your friends arent coughing you shouldnt be either. especially if you smoke cigarettes. if everyone is coughing then take some coals off. most lounges dont do a good job of bowl packing/coal management.

i only smoke at one lounge/restaurant because i like smoking after i eat and because the arguileh is only 5 or 6 bucks, no way in hell i'm paying almost double at other places when it tastes and smokes like shit. lounges do a HORRIBLE job of doing anything right in my experience (which there have been a lot of)

If not already mentioned, a good seal between the end of the hose and your mouth is crucial as well. Getting air in through an improper hose to mouth seal is essentially the same as inhaling through the nose while puffing on the hose.

Some other things to consider is if your friends smoke other things...cigarette smokers will be more used to smoke, and thus may be able to handle shisha burning hotter than normal, etc.

this thread was deep... you stop inhaling when you exhale but thats not right hm... and the hookah bubbles cuz its a vaccuum and has nothing to do with the water in the base.. apparently

like mustang said, if your friends smoke cigarettes or other things they may be more able to take burning shisha while you may not if you dont. Also a wealth of information can be found on youtube on peoples blogs and how-to videos on how to set up a hookah properly. And lastly please learn to type at least mostly in real words.
