Homemade Glass Phunnel Mod

Hey I just wanted to show off a little project that I worked on while enjoying my Thanksgiving break.

First of all: *Disclaimer* Cutting/Melting glass can be extremely dangerous if you don't know what you are doing. I work in a scientific laboratory and have the proper tools/safety equipment to do this without ending up with shards of melted glass in my eyeballs.

I don't have the equipment or supplies to "create" glass object from scratch....so I did the next best thing: scrounged around until I found something that would work, cut it up, shaped it up, and melted it together!

Glass Phunnel Bowl Mod:

Supplies: 125mL Pyrex Erlenmeyer Flask, 50mL Pyrex beaker, diamond saw, torch.

Started with the flask:

Heated up the rim and used a screwdriver to bend spouts:

Used the diamond saw to cut the top off:

Used the diamond saw to cut the bottom off the beaker and shape it:

The two finished pieces:

Used a torch to melt the two pieces together:

The finished product:

On the bowl:

And that's it...I will admit that it was a decent pain in my ass but once I get an idea in my head, I have to make it work, lol.

Next up: the bottom of the flask as a glass screen?? Will post upon success......

Thanks for the comments smile.gif

It works great so far! I really wanted a mod but I'm a broke grad student and didn't want to wait for shipping either. So I was looking around the lab to see if I had anything I could make one with...metal, glass, w/e. I saw that flask and the lightbulb went off!

It took some time but I was pretty surprised at how well it came out myself!

lol, actually, I noticed that a larger Erlenmeyer flask might work as a replacement base. I didn't measure them out or anything but I suppose one could make something work.

As for an all glass hookah, you could use something like a Buchner flask which is just an Erlenmeyer flask with a hose port sticking off the side. Then a glass funnel with a long stem for the bowl/downstem. Usually you would use a rubber stopper with a hole in the middle as the seal between the two...but that's not sticking to the all-glass theme! But with the right supplies, tools, and time you could definitely make an all glass hookah. Although it would look like a science experiment!

And I think the mod has good air flow. I'm still a hookah noob so I haven't gotten it perfectly down quite yet. My last couple of sessions have been a bit of a struggle. I'm really starting to think that this Chinese Phunnel is...well, garbage? The heat management sucks and it goes through coal like crazy....

Yea, after everything I read on here, I was dubious about that bowl from the start. But for awhile there, the Tangiers were no where to be found. So when I placed a big order of coal and shisha, I just picked up a Chinese at the same time. Sometimes I get good smokes and other times it's just a huge frustration...even with the same shisha. So I'm really excited about the mini-phunnel: MINI-PHUNNEL WOOOT!!

And no, I really don't have that much time..lol...but big brain and amazing? Well, I can't argue too much with that! tongue.gif j/k

I was just obsessed with Legos as a child and now I work in an optics/laser laboratory which is almost like playing with Legos but using lenses and fiber optics and lasers that can burn a hole in you or blind you if you mess up and chemicals that will dissolve your bones if you spill it on yourself.....

eh, keeps me on my toes...

Wow, those hookahs are incredible! And I am not at all surprised by the price. I think I definitely have to look into learning glass blowing...you could make so much awesome stuff. And of course people will pay top dollar for custom stuff...

oh dafunk, you didn't get yours? You betta talk to your mail-man! wink.gif
