newjacksm
I dont know what the problem is I know there really cant be much to this problem coals or hole pattern. I just made smaller holes and double foil still sorta harsh. I am use 1/4 exoticas still some what harsh. Yesterday it was SB Pumpkin pie and today its AF Esk. Apple. Some drags are harsh and some drags arent. My hookah is clean. Edited November 29, 2008 by newjacksm
clickhea
well its pretty much what you suggested already, heat and hole patterns.try less holes, small holes or less coals
momatik
Maybe you should add more holes...?When you say some drags are harsh and others are decent, do you mean it becomes decent after you move the coal or something?
newjacksm
Its grainy on the throat (if that makes sense) I think I have a lot of holes right now. I dont have a normal toothpick I have kebab skewer but I can control the hole size with that. Can leaving shisha in a ziplock bag for a while tamper with the shishas quality? ryno
What kind of bowl are you using and how many coals? I'd stick with one layer of foil. Also... if you're not taking hits too often, try purging it. KMs have a big base and its easy to get stale smoke in there. For AF in an Egyptian head i use two quarters of an Exotica, small phunnel, I use a third and a quarter.. wincover when needed for both

ryno
From the pic, only thing I can suggest is smaller holes. Try using a thumbtack.
momatik
^That looks fine.Hmm...that's really odd.I mean especially with SB, it has never given me any trouble. When your sprinkling the pumpkin pie in the bowl, don't sprinkle it in up to the brim, but rather just a bit lower. clickhea
yeah make sure its not touching the foil
Voski
It is the exoticas. Same thing happened to me all of a sudden my bowls were harsh. I used different coals and it was fine.I personally use less holes then you do though.
newjacksm
I overpack all my shisha. This time especially to the point the juices went over and into the phunnel hole and dripped down the bowl after I had lit up the coals and started smoking. Hippo_Master
Why are you overpacking a phunnel? I don't see the point of that, it could only cause problems. You should get a Mod. Also, smoke harshness is never the fault of the hookah, always the smoker. AF has been smoking with a bite because of their new cut, which they either need to change or perfect. SB Pumpkin pie might be drier than normal, causing a bite in the throat. Exoticas burn oddly in the winter, Coconaras are more controlled. Your hole pattern looks OK, except the hole in the middle, but as I stated you need a Mod.
newjacksm
I started to think it may be the exoticas about half way threw I noticed the quality of my exoticas have fallen a bit. The bars come out with a slight bend they arent completly straight some feel heavier then others.

I get 2 boxes, half of one is good, a few sticks from the other may be good, but the others bend or completly fall apart on me, on the hookah or the stove.. When they're good, they're great, when they're not... epic fail
Bulldog_916
To me, it cant be the coals, I figured out real early that these things burn hot. Go smaller pieces of coal and use three in a triangle pattern like you would with coconaras. Also, smaller holes, pin sized, all over the foil. No shisha other than Tangiers and possibly Nakhla need holes that big.

Canon
If your shisha has just started getting harsh and you havent changed anything on how you prepare your hookah then it must be the shisha or the coals. if theres nothing about either then it must be the climate effect on shisha. id let your shisha acclimate, its winter and the climate probably changed alot in your house (heater) or outside (dry cold air) or both. ToncSTAR
im assuming thats a phunnel?if not, maybe the juices from previous sessions are doing that.
tonyrocksxcore
had this exact same problem right when i switched coals and tried af shisha the EXOTICA coals have lighter fluid in them and it looks like your poking your holes to close causeing the coals to heat up more and let that toxin out..the AF is dry compared to the sb flavors and is made a little differently so depending on your coal and hookah setup it tends to burn alot.. im not sure how you hit your hookah but if you leave the coals on the bowl and not hit it for a few minutes the heat builds up inside the foil causeing it to get harth those first few hits that is probably the main reson your hitting it sometimes and it gets harsh and then mellows down a little SOLUTION dont let your hookah sit around with coals on the bowl get a bigger funnel or dont pack your bowl so big use a little less holes try 13 on outside ring maybe 8 inside ring and then in the middle where the sucking from the funnel comes from like 6 safety pin size holes mix your flavors if it will make it juicier GOOD LUCK hope my info helped
Canon
why would exotica's have lighter fluid in them, its pointless cause exoticas are dry and for lighter fluid to work then it has to be wet, you cant light dry lighter fluid.that makes no sense. show me your proof
