NEW YORK (AP) — Police were reviewing video from surveillance cameras in an attempt to identify who trampled to death a Wal-Mart worker after a crowd of post-Thanksgiving shoppers burst through the doors at a suburban store and knocked him down.

Criminal charges were possible, but identifying individual shoppers in Friday's video may prove difficult, said Detective Lt. Michael Fleming, a Nassau County police spokesman.

Other workers were trampled as they tried to rescue the man, and customers stepped over him and became irate when officials said the store was closing because of the death, police and witnesses said.

At least four other people, including a woman who was eight months pregnant, were taken to hospitals for observation or minor injuries. The store in Valley Stream on Long Island closed for several hours before reopening.

Police said about 2,000 people were gathered outside the Wal-Mart doors before its 5 a.m. opening at a mall about 20 miles east of Manhattan. The impatient crowd knocked the employee, identified by police as Jdimytai Damour, to the ground as he opened the doors, leaving a metal portion of the frame crumpled like an accordion.

"This crowd was out of control," Fleming said. He described the scene as "utter chaos," and said the store didn't have enough security.

Dozens of store employees trying to fight their way out to help Damour were also getting trampled by the crowd, Fleming said. Shoppers stepped over the man on the ground and streamed into the store.

Damour, 34, of Queens, was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead around 6 a.m., police said. The exact cause of death has not been determined.

A 28-year-old pregnant woman was taken to a hospital, where she and the baby were reported to be OK, said police Sgt. Anthony Repalone.

Kimberly Cribbs, who witnessed the stampede, said shoppers were acting like "savages."

"When they were saying they had to leave, that an employee got killed, people were yelling 'I've been on line since yesterday morning,"' she said. "They kept shopping."

Wal-Mart Stores Inc., based in Bentonville, Ark., called the incident a "tragic situation" and said the employee came from a temporary agency and was doing maintenance work at the store. It said it tried to prepare for the crowd by adding staffers and outside security workers, putting up barricades and consulting police.

"Despite all of our precautions, this unfortunate event occurred," senior Vice President Hank Mullany said in a statement. "Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families of those impacted."

A woman reported being trampled by overeager customers at a Wal-Mart opening Friday in Farmingdale, about 15 miles east of Valley Stream, Suffolk County police said. She suffered minor injuries, but finished shopping before filling the report, police said.

Shoppers around the country line up early outside stores on the day after Thanksgiving in the annual bargain-hunting ritual known as Black Friday. It got that name because it has historically been the day when stores broke into profitability for the full year.

Items on sale at the Valley Stream Wal-Mart included a Samsung 50-inch Plasma HDTV for $798, a Bissel Compact Upright Vacuum for $28, a Samsung 10.2 megapixel digital camera for $69 and DVDs such as "The Incredible Hulk" for $9.

Has anyone else seen this? It's really just pathetic more than anything.

This made me laugh out loud when I heard about it yesterday.

I guess that makes me a terrible person.

If it does then I'm a terrible person too.

Honestly, this is disgusting on so many levels. As much as I would love to say this is somehow Wal-Mart's fault, it is not. Although...one could stretch and say that their low prices were so low that people forgot that a living human-being was being trampled underneath their feet. *sigh*

I have, in my twenty years on this planet, lost all faith in humanity and whenever I hear a story like this, it reaffirms my stance.

Hm this makes me think about those people who are anti gun saying that guns should be banned and then there are the people who say guns to kill people bullets do. In this case of walmart I see a possible theme. Lets all blame walmart because people dont kill people walmart does. lol laugh.gif I wish walmart would just go away. Its the most disgusting place ever. Another reason i would not recommend american a "cool" place to live.

Does anyone agree with me that this black friday business just provokes greed? I did go out on black friday just for groceries but next door there where tons of people trying to gobble up everything they could see.

This isnt just people greed, this is corporate greed as well. They want to offload their stock of goods so that they can run a tighter margin. Just supply and demand. When you have a huge supply and no demand, you stoke demand by lowering the price. Economics 101.

I agree. Thx for making that point.

Who the hell stands in FRONT of the doors when there is a crowd like that. You stand off the the side, have a person on either side of the double doors, reach accross and unlock them and swing the doors to the side to open them while you stand out of the way...

Idiots all around.

Bunch of hicks? Hrm... most of the crowd looks pretty 'urban' to me scratch_one-s_head.gif

Same sort of shit happens everywhere though. One walmart around me had a shooting, and another had a big fistfight. People are ridiculous.

Your average person is barely above a caveman when it comes right down to it..more like a sheep or cow. Happy to sit and chew their cuds while others aroudn them get slaughtered, but they are easily started into stampedes and Mob psycology.

Valley Stream isn't really a bad town. But yes if trust me there are no "hicks" on long island. If your going to try and specify who was at that wal-mart. Im sure it was more Black, Hispanic ratio but of course there was white people there and part of the trampling.

Someone is going to be beside themselves with grief.

Some serious tack shown here.

However. It's shocking that this could happen. Personally I blame consumerism it's self.

Does anyone need shiny pointless tat that bad?

Just another case of the good-Christians celebrating their pagan-originated holiday, and spreading their christianity values.

The news media has been showing a clip from a target store, where a load of "hicks" (mainly female)are charging through the door at a full run. All the while talking about this walmart incident. It is misleading as hell... just our fine news in action again. The few of the actual clips they show are all a bunch of fat, white, donut-gobbling jackboots standing around afterward. BBC-Canada must not have gotten the memo to not let the public see the actual crowd.

Don't turn this thread into a "My religion is better thread" by shitting on someone's faith.
