Best Coals For A Phunnel?

Recommended Posts

hey guys, im planning to make a larger order from nmhookah and was set on getting those exotica jap finger coals, ones you break into small pieces. now the more i read all the reviews the more im unsure so just wanted any opinions here.

Ill be ordering a tangiers phunnel bowl aswell so not quite looking for large circle coals. I usually smoke it with my girlfriend out in my jeep since we get a nice view wherever we park, since its winter its too cold to be outside and since i live out of the city and shes on the opposite end the closest one, usually meet up in the middle, plus a bracket i made it holds the hookah well smile.gif anyways my point was that if its a hard to light coal it might pose some issues. Currently, I just hold the coal and torch it for a minute.

Any opinions?

Most people will suggest Coconaras. Since you want one that will light quickly, try the Instant Lite Coconut Coals from www.hookahjohn.com. They light all the way through in 15 seconds, and last as long as a Coconara. Edited by Zinite

I just grabbed a box of the golden canary japanese coals. I wouldn't recommend them. They cost as much as cocos and 4 of them on my medium phunnel was not giving me the same amount of smoke I get from three cocos.

+1 Those are some of the best QLs out there and burn for a good time. I'd pass on the Exotica Japs, I've had them before and don't care for them at all

The CH Instant Lite coconut coals from HookahJohn are probably the best QL's on the market, and it sounds like you need a good QL.

The only downside to that is that it will be a bitch to light the coal if you're not near a stove or similar power source.

is it possible to light them with a torch? or is that frowned upon for whatever reason

Yeah you'll just be using a hell of a lot of gas lighting 3 or 4 natural coals. You're seriously better off ordering the Instant Lite Coconuts from hookahjohn.com. It's the only coal I use when I'm smoking outdoors.

Despite fanboy mania, I've found that 3 kings are great for instant lights. Normally around 11-12 for a box of 33mm's, and 14 or so for 40mm's, and they work.

They light up fast, don't produce too much smoke while doing so, and give good, consistent heat. While there is some taste, it is less than most other non-natural coals I've used. With a windcover and a standard egyptian bowl I can smoke a full hour with two three kings (33mm)

Edit: For a phunnel and tangiers I use three 3kings, and it lasts a few minutes shy of an hour usually before I need more coals. Edited by AKammenzind

My suggestion is to go with 3kings Quick lights I cant see how you would light a coconara with a torch. It would take forever and if your smoking in the car it will not be fun every time you need light 3 coals.

As for the HookahJohn QL Coconut coals, you would have to light the coals outside of your car and let them sit out there till they are fully light. They produce a crazy amount of smell and smoke when lighting I cant use them in my garage its that bad so in a Car i think you would pass out.

If you end up using 3K i would suggest you invest in a scalli mod for your phunnel i find it helps alot because it kind of filters the amount of coal dust that enters the smoke especially when using ql.

Where in Canada are you located?

sorry for the double post, connection fluttered.

With lighting the coals i always light it outside the vehicle until it finishes sparkling. I dont think i would ever do it inside any vehicle regardless of the coal lol.

I've starred at every coal under the charcoal section at hookahjohn and theres no wording of instant lite coconuts, either that or im seriously questioning my vision.

I've used about 8-10 rolls of the 3kings and didnt like it very much. Im located a few minutes east of Calgary AB

i would go with hookahjohns easy lites also known as CH quick lites. First of all you get a box with a ton of coal for a decent price, second they last pretty good and give good heat.

If you dont like your 3 kings hookajohn is the way to go.
