i read about these things called "miracle berries" one time, in an anecdotal post from god-knows-where.. some african tribe or south american tribe or something has them i believe... well, they taste truly horrid, apparently, but after eating them one can supposedly taste all acidic flavors as sweet instead.  there were reports of people eating them, then drinking straight vinegar and enjoying it immensely.  seems strange to me, but certainly not unbelievable.

I cant imagine it, our tongues are designed to test for various chemicals. Sour is the chemical representation of acidic, sweet is the chemical representation of a sugar, which our bodies need for energy. Chemically, very different. Numbing the tongue would just neutralize the taste buds and make it taste like "nothing". I don't know.

yeah in my cultural anthropology class last semester we learned about
those berries. apparently some people that didn't know what they were
doing got some pretty bad ulcers from eating limes and stuff straight
up since they suddenly tasted so sweet. use wisely (like around
thanksgiving at some relative's house serving God-knows-what)

Make your  own lye!Take the ashes from your charcoal, put them in a small amount of water (About three ounces). Heat or allow the water to evaporate. The white residue is lye. (and some carbonates, nitrates and sulfates, but mostly lye)
