Kathrynx
I don't think so, I've never heard of anyone breaking their bowl besides dropping it.We even have one of those fancy jet bowls, and never has cracked or anything. Maybe your friend knew of someone with a crappy bowl that already had a crack in it.
Kapten Kanel
A bowl should not break from the heat that coals produce, but doesnt it get more prone to cracking, like if you drop a hot bowl theres a bigger risk of it cracking?
inino
no. one time me and my friends stacked a shit ton of coals at the end of our session and tried to see who could get the biggest rip. didnt crack. i think if its really hot and you put it under ice cold water it might crack though. AKammenzind
No, not really. It's vaguely possible to destroy the bowl with too many coals... but really only if you pop it into a forge and get the temp up to maybe a couple thousand degrees. Or if you had a big container of coals, and dropped them onto the bowl from a reasonable heighy... hehe.
staygone
When the bowls are made, the kiln reaches temps of a trillion degrees. Coals only produce 0.0000000000001% of that heat.-QM Edited December 6, 2008 by QuiltedMaple
smokering0
QM, not sure if you where joking or not but the hypocenter of a nuke theoretically is infinite as its imposible to test but the estimation is up to 500 million degrees F. Preetty sure kilns dont top that, It does not take much to make glass and ceramics brittle and the heat from the coals will certainly make them more fragile. I have dropped a hot tangiers bowl though and it was fine....tough bowls.

mattathayde
any ceramic bowl should be fine. a glass bowl could crack if you tossed like 5 coals right on it at once or some how got it to heat up crazy fast or chilled it fast.the ceramics (any clay bowl people use) are fired well above what the coals can put out so it will be fine-matt

Guess what I'm getting at is that if a coal busts your bowl, you got a bad bowl.-QM
chinamon
it would depend on what the bowl is made of. a good bowl will not crack from too much heat (you wouldnt want to smoke with that many coals anyway.. might as well swallow hot coals).a few years ago when i was chilling in a hotel room smoking shisha, i put the hot coal in the glass ash tray temporarily to pack a new bowl. the heat from the coal cracked the ash try in three pieces within 30 seconds. hotel charges us $10 for a $1 ash tray.
