Help With Smoking For The First Time

I accidentally posted in the wrong section of the forum earlier... here is the post I made earlier today

"Hey all, I'm new to the forum and smoking using a hookah. My friend and I had started cigar night and decided that we wanted to try hookah instead of cigars. So my friend and I split the cost of a Nile Hookah that was on a holiday special (it was about 50$ plus shipping... sounded like a good deal). We decided to get apple and cherry flavored tobacco. Is there anything anyone can share to help us make our first time successful? We have only ever watched other people smoke and never set it up ourselves. Thanks in advance!

How do we know if the bowl is packed well?

Before you light the coals, cut two in half and use 3 halves. If there's no smoke coming out, use more heat. If the smoke is harsh on your throat, use less heat.

The bowl is packed well when the shisha is to the top of the bowl. Sprinkle it in lightly and avoid pressing it down. Make sure the holes on the bottom of the bowl stay clear.

Use foil. The screens will allow ash to mix in with the shisha and make it taste like crap.

Drop the screen. Throw it in the trash can if you can, because that's where it belongs. Foil > Screen.

As for the setup..just pack and smoke..this is all about experience. What might work for me might not exactly for someone else, and what might work for another, might not work for me.

But in the general rules:

Dont pack the bowl too tight especially if its a standard Egyptian bowl [You dotn want to cut the air circulation by mashing up the tobacco together, keep the airflow going]

Do not make too many holes on the foil

Apply coals accordingly. I dont know how big your bowl is, so I would say 2 quicklites to start..and keep the coals rotating. Also, if you can, skip on the quicklites if you want to truly enjoy your sessions.

Honestly, the first time you pack your own hookah is not going to be an amazing experience. It in fact, will not be amazing until you get some experience. At leas this was what happened to me. You have to learn your hookah and learn your own style.

I'd have to agree. Especially if you're smoking romman for your first time, I've had four flavors of it and none of them were at all satisfying.

totally been where you are except I had the Pharaoh when I started.

With Romman it's pretty easy.

Dump the Romman into a small baggie from the box. This way you can squeeze the juices around to make sure it's moist each time and you can squeeze it back into the 50g box.

I would use foil. It's easier to use than a screen when you are learning. Although I still use them occasionally.

Pinch the Romman with two fingers and drop it in the bowl until it's full just above the bowl, shouldn't take much with the standard bowl. Put the foil on and wrap it type and poke a lot of holes all over.

Zinite, is right about the quicklights. Took me a couple of months before I tried that.

You should have a decent smoke. And with time and trial and error you will get it down pat!
