*Veritas*
Did you let your coals light fully and ash a bit before placing them on the bowl??
Zinite
Make sure the coals are fully lit (and then some) before using them. Also, give your hookah a good cleaning with either dish soap (make sure you wash it out really well with hot water) or baking soda and lemon juice. r1v3th3ad
check your hose too...from what I've seen around here, 9/10 times ash taste is rusted hose(from people washing non-washables)What size phunnel is it?It could be the heat...I generally use 3 halves of 33mm qls for my medium and 4 halves for my large...easy maintenance...too little heat and you are a halve away, too much and you're not wasting too much taking it off.edit: I mentioned heat because you need it just right to be getting flavor

If you have an air compressor or canned air, blow your hose out. If brown shit comes out, it's rust. A bad hose can make the smoke taste like ash regardless of how well you set everything else up. DJ_HOSSEIX
from what i know if you over pack AF you will get a nasty taste, plastic like almost so maybe you can check how much you have packed. As far as rings go try 3 circles with no hole in the middle. If you are using a medium phunnel put 3 QL in a triangular/V form.Play around with packing and heat, usually AF is very easy to get going well. For example, if it's a medium phunnel, light 4 halves of the quick light. Start with putting 2 halves on the bowl. Wait a couple minutes (maybe try a windcover), and if the smoke isn't dense enough, add another coal. Repeat til the smoke is perfect. If it tastes ashy, remove a coal and try again. DJ_HOSSEIX
also mix your shisha before you place it into your phunnel.
