Hookah Explosion

Recommended Posts

Just finished a session of bizarre mishaps (including burnt shisha, a flaming vacuum, and a broken soup bowl), and I have a question about a particular event.

After packing our second bowl, we noticed that the shisha was tasting unusual. We were using a double foil layer with very small holes, and when I went to remove the foil and examine the bowl, the sound of a pressure valve went off and blew smoke and hot air everywhere. Can anyone explain what caused this? I'd like to avoid it in the future as it freaked everyone out and was a pretty big buzz kill.

ermmmmmmmm, ummmmmmm, uhhhhhhhhh...

what kind of hookah are you using? maybe the holes you poked on the foil were just TOO small? maybe you used too much coals?

or maybe it was just one of your friends doing a practical joke on you?

it sounds kinda impossible unless you have boiling water in your base. Edited by modisess

From the looks of it, there's not enough air circulation. Try using larger holes (about the diameter of a toothpick) but less of them. Looks like some back pressure built up and/or there is some sort of blockage that caused this back pressure.

It's a brass Lebanese hookah I bought in Byblos. I used a thumb tack to poke the holes, which I've done many times before. I was using 2 40mm QLs, which I've also done before with this set up. And it definitely was not a practical joke as it was only the second time my friends had smoked hookah. Also, not boiling water in the base but iced milk.

I'm not making this up.

Well if the shisha was burning it could have stuck to the foil and blocked the holes..

I'm pretty surethe shisha was burning; smoke rose from the bowl even when I took the coal off, and it tasted bad. BUT it wasn't stuck to the foil. Could this be because the force of the pressure being released pushed the foil off the shisha?

Could be I guess. Was the foil tight and dipped before you removed it?

Were you smoking with someone else? It is possible they grabbed the hose and cleared it when you were removing the bowl so you would get scared. I would cream my friends all the time when we would smoke out of a multi-hose hookah.

Yeah it was.

And for the friends effing with me theory, the people I was smoking with do not know enough about the mechanics of a hookah to set up a joke as elaborate as this one. Also, this was a single hose and it was on the ground when this happened.

maybe one of yoru friends blew in the hose when you were removing the foil? sounds the most logical to me

I was kinda wondering if maybe you had something stuck in the stem so when you sucked on the hose the milk drew up and couldnt go back down untill all at once the clog cleared and the milk resettled and forced air up the pipe. That or a friend blew in the hose, I had a friend that did that to me, I kicked his lilly ass, and he didnt get to smoke for a week!

I agree with Gold Wing Gunner, The milk might have gotten trapped due to pressure and once you lifted the foil it released. Maybe because the shisha burned, it blocked off the airways in the bottom of the bowl... When you lifted the foil it shifted it just enough to open the airways back up and BOOM.
