Hole Pattern

Recommended Posts

I dont really know for sure if hole patterns help a lot, but i know without a doubt that it helps a bit. Too many little holes cause coal to get stuck; blocking heat, too many big holes allow pieces of coal to fall through, etc etc. Heres the hole pattern i use after some experimenting, never get a burning taste, no coal pieces gets stuck in the holes, and it seems to work pretty well.

"Paterns" in foil are largely unneccesary. This is a common misconception- but lets think about this logically. If there are a lot of holes, you are going to get more air flow and more heat. If there are only a few holes, you will have less air flor and less heat. Paterns in the foil do absolutly nothing except make your setup time longer.
I use lots of big holes, for better draw.
I do the same.  I find using small holes (think push-pin size) makes for a bad draw.  I typically use the pointy-thing that comes on tongs because I have a few sitting around the kitchen.  I make 8-16 holes, usually in some sort of symettrical fashion.
