Smoking On A Boat...

Recommended Posts

Windscreen? Heat management is gonna be a pain with the coals wanting to roll around. Maybe pack the bowl lighter so you can recess the foil and have a place for the coal to kinda chill in the middle. Hehe chill, well I think you know what I mean.

i dunno bro, a lot of factors play here. obviously the waves, wind, type of boat , etc.. i'd say forget smoking even with any type of shield/mod foil if the boat is moving, even just coasting, might be difficult.. wouldn't want coal burns on your new boat.
some boats have little ports , ie, to stick in a table, to store.. might want to rig something up that will totally support the hookah, then make sure to absolutely block out the area around it (in case the coat does fall), and consider more than just a foil surrounding..

would love to go out on your hookaboat when u get it set up! haha

idk dude trying to smoke on a moving boat sounds like a bad idea from logistics and from the whole fire+boat=bad

but as to how, i would pack the bowl up like usual, then make a ring of foil and put another layer over it (the way some people set up so they dont have to move coals around and it makes heat management easier for them), then figure out a way to wrap it up to keep the coals from moving around

I think one of the lock-lid mod bowls are your best bet too, anything else just poses a risk. Even then, you are running a risk of the bowl coming unlatched or something. Besides the coal falling off, arn't you worried about the hookah itself falling over? I think that would be more of a problem than the coal if it is rocking that much.

Naw, the hookah wont fall over; Ive got a few ideas on how to keep that basically "glued (not literally) to the boat, custom fabbed stands/tables and etc.
I think what im going to do is fashion a custom cover that attaches to the stem thats basically made of mesh on top and metal around the sides, like a windcover except a bit more room and keeps the coals in place more. purpose of it will be mainly stopping the coals from flying (with a little flap of course). Plus theres plenty of water to put out a fire biggrin.gif and well have a fire extinguisher and people watching it.

I'll give you my advice, but only because I've done exactly what you wanna do before. First off don't even bother thinking about smoking while your moving, it's just not possible due to the fact that you will never get stable enough to support it. We custom fabbed a steel stand in the center console of my friends 28' Mako and the waves while under power will make tons of water go up your hose. Granted we were using a Mya QT, but all the same it was a real pain in the ass. We also had to custom fab a quadruple size ash tray with a vertical 3 inch lip at the edges for those just in case moments with the coals. Which we had even when we weren't moving and we'd get a bigger then normal wave pushin us around. I'd strongly think through this idea of smoking while moving before you give it a try, it really isn't worth the safety risk and the pain in the ass it is. If your stopped it's plenty doable with a little more attention and care then normal, but I'd say smoking once you get back to the dock would still be the best way to go.

Me, I'd say go with a cigar or a pipe. If you smoke a pipe, I suggest the Kirsten, made right here in Seattle. Best smoke I've ever had from any pipe - they're an aluminum stem, lucite mouthpiece and briar bowl (or meerschaum if you really want to go high-end) and they're customizable - straight, quarter-bent or fullbent stems in three sizes (two on fullbent) in three colors, with three mouthpiece colors, about eight bowl shapes in four or five finishes in three sizes. And all parts can be bought separately. They have a built-in filter that works tops over those silly Medico "pipe filters", they look cool, and they're favored by ship captains in Seattle. A light breeze and mine will stay lit all the way through.

It isn't shisha, quite, but if you can, get some cherry pipe tobacco from the Carmel Pipe Shop, Carmel-By-The-Sea, California. That or Three-Cherry from Tinder Box, Tacoma, WA are as close to shisha as pipe tobacco gets - yum.

Below, Kirsten pipes. L to R: black Esquire, silver Mariner (with vintage Missouri Meerschaum bowl) and silver Designer with vintage Danish-freehand bowl, plus ten or so extra bowls of various styles. I collect all manner of pipes - briar, meerschaum, etc. but I generally smoke only Kirstens.

If you get a hookah to work on a boat, by one of the above methods, let us know...

someone mentioned to me tat they use a windcover upside down, they put the windcover on the stem before the bowl and it's supposed to fit perfectly. I'm sure it will depend on the windcover and stem but if it works for you it may work for this occasion.
oh, and obviously don't use round finger coals, had to mention that.

The crown method works perfectly for keeping the coals on the bowl. The problem with wind covers is that they leave a space between the bowl and the walls of the wind cover. I would suggest only smoking in the intracoastal, where it isn't so rough. Edited by Doubon
