Mirus
Seriously, why? From what I hear its an aquired taste, and with the taste, I honestly have no motivation to try to aquire it. Any brands that don't put Anise in?

ColibriDon
QUOTE (giant ninja robot @ Dec 16 2008, 08:59 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>Anyone know where the tradition started though?WHY DOES DA taste like anise? That's a really good question, when I first ordered AF DA, I was expecting sour apple & red delicious or something. Imagine my surprise when I tasted anise. Maybe there's an apple-shaped fruit that tastes like anise in the Middle East. Honestly I have no idea but it's worth investigating. mushrat
I'll ask a friend, but perhaps Anise is a favorite spice in Egypt? Nakhla was the first of the flavoured tobaccos, i believe i read in 1986 the egyptian govt asked Nakhla to make hookahs more attractive to the young people who were starting to smoke cigarettes more and more. DA was on fo the first of the flavour so I suspect a cultural angle to the Anise addition. ANY DA has anise, no matter what the brand. Also any Bahrani Apple is going to have anise as well. Stick to Eskandrani and single apples.

Hippo_Master
Anise has flavored many things for many years, including candy and beverages, and still does. It's a very versatile spice, and is the base of the licorice candy flavor we know of. I suppose that Apple was released, by nakhla or whomever was in fact the first moasell producer, and they might not have had another flavor to release after they started to get appreciation, and they release a variation on the apple flavor with a spice that is used in many common applications. Maybe it was another flavor they offered after someone decided to add anise to a bowl of apple. Maybe it's been around for a long time, the mixture between anise and apple, and they just thought it would be a good idea to mass produce it, and it was. What I think is that the mixture of anise and apple in moasell has been around since people started adding dried fruit to their tobacco and were looking for a spice that translated into smoke well, and discovered anise did just that.Anyways, DA tastes like mostly Licorice because companies use a Licorice flavor to add to their tobacco, not traditional anise, which is lighter and sweeter. Licorice is a very strong candy flavor. Also: AF Esk. is very floral. The best single apple flavor I have had is Romman. inino
i think its just there to separate regular apple from DA. esk apple and apple bahraini dont have anise though, at least none i can taste. layalina esk apple is the best imo.
Hippo_Master
I don't remember too well, but i do think nakhla Apple has a bit of anise. Their Mizo Apple does in fact have anise, but more apple then normal. Af Apple is like a candy apple. Actually, that's pretty much exactly it. Sonthert
The anise flavor will come in and out, based on humidity, but Nahkla double apple is actually apple, anise and rose. Its supposedly has something to do with Arak (Anise and brandy liqueur), which is anise flavored, its supposed to have a "bad-boy" flavor as Arak is kinda popular, but prohibited by Islamic anti-alcohol ideas. Tangiers doesn't add any anise to any of its apple flavors.
