kikkoman1231
QUOTE (bradleyclark86 @ Jan 9 2009, 10:07 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>Taxes will always be the double edged sword of this country. The people want them as low as possible so they can enjoy their paychecks, but yet the government needs money to do stuff (granted, they should invest is GOOD stuff, ex: roads, schools, etc.) Right now, here in Kentucky, the hot topic is whether or not to legalize gambling. Louisville (and the rest of the state) is losing A LOT of money to Indiana's gambling boats. There's 2 groups of people fighting to keep it out of the state: the hardcore religious right who feel that gambling is immoral, and the horse owners who fear losing business to the boats.Religion is a farce; it's a blindfold for pragmatism. Imagine how many new jobs and new revenue would come into the area if casinos were allowed! People will be employed by the casino; and new revenue will be created because tourists and locals will go there at night or on the weekend to gamble or for entertainment (concerts, comedians, etc. if they have an auditorium planned). It would be great! But in terms of taxes, especially the federal income tax, they are not needed. The misuse of federal government money helps me to believe that our money isn't going to the right places, be it in the form of foreign aid, wars, annual bonuses, etc. I'm all for state taxes, as every state has different needs and are and should be responsible enough to manage their own budget, which is something the federal government cannot do, per se. Property taxes are a joke, as well, because we don't even own the land that our house stands on. Once we are able to pay off our mortgage(s), we should be able to keep our land however we want it, as long as it meets city or county regulations or intrude on our neighbors.I hope that was useful. kikkoman1231
Just to add, on taxes:If there was no federal tax, people would have money to keep in their hands to spend as they wish, like you said. This restored capital can be used to start businesses. The new businesses can employ people (create new jobs, something that's been much in the news lately because of Obama's "plan"). The restored capital can be used to buy goods from said businesses, and the employees from these said businesses can spend their money elsewhere, perhaps to buy products from a new business as well.Taxes have always undermined wealth, and I have been a strong anti-tax advocate because of this philosophy. bradleyclark86
Speaking of creating jobs...Some of friends of mine have encouraged me to take out a small business loan or save up or something, and open a local hookah bar near the campus. The nearest one is in Lexington and they get plenty of business from the UK students, and I know of some EKU students down here who would prefer a local establishment. I already found a place for rent near the local hookah shop...would make for a good location being so close to each other.I know it's a little off topic, but I thought I would just throw that out there.
