I cant understand how anybody puts anything with Zag like agave nectar or whatever you put in it. (not trying to come off as an ass just trying to understand). In any case I have found out that it is nice and smooth without foil and I think thats the proper way of smoking it and its more of a lighter version of Tumbak. I personally did not get much of a buzz off of it but I have quite a tolerance to nicotine. However I did feel it in my lungs the next morning. Def. not something I would suggest to smoke regularly unless you have iron lungs.

I typically use a little glycerin and honey but today I picked up some black strap molasses. I mixed about 1/4 tsp of the molasses with the zagh but I am only getting whispers of smoke. I have two cocos and a windcover on there and I'm in the process of lighting a 3rd. For those of you who have used molasses before, can you give me some pointers?

Thanks

Damn. I heard from other sources that blackstrap is good for Nakhla Zag and Salloum Plain. I guess I will tinker around with it some more. I got it to work by adding a 3rd coconut coal to it and the smoke was medium. Next time I am going to mix the molasses in and let it sit for a little while vs mixing it and smoking right after.

I'll be trying the following soon:

Nakhla Zag
Glycerin
Organic Blueberry Flavor Extract
Small Tangiers phunnel + Glass screen

Ended up with Zag purely looking for a base tobacco w/o having to grow... Edited by freeOS

Bumping this bad boy...

Had my first Zag experience last night with a couple of guys from Saudi. They showed me the traditional way of smoking it.

The Gear: Egyptian Clay Bowl, 19" KM single-hose, Temsah standard hose, water/ice in base, and AF Coconut Coals

The Setup: First thing we did was fluff all the tobacco really well. It's a bit thicker and waxier than regular Nak so I found it to be a bit more difficult. Next, we sprinkled the tobacco very lightly into the bowl. My friend emphasized it had to be packed very, very loosly for best results. We filled the bowl to just above the rim and assembled the hookah. Keep in mind, we used NO FOIL.

The Procedure: Once we had two AF Nats fully lit, my friend put two, side-by-side, DIRECTLY onto the tobacco near the edge of the bowl. He explained the idea is to smoke for a bit, then move the coals, working your way around the bowl.

The Results: It took a bit for the tobacco to get started since it's so dry, and to be honest, was more difficult to guage because you just don't get the smoke from Zag that you do with other shishas. Once it started, it was pretty good. Definately a whole other experience from the fruity stuff that's so common to smoke. The smoke itself was very light but very potent. I wouldn't call it harsh but it did get pretty hot at times and left a noticable tickle in the back of my throat. The aroma was amazing, though. It smelled just like cigars, and you could smell it from across the lounge.

The Buzz: The buzz was definately noticable but very different, IMO. When I smoke Nak, Tangiers and even sometimes AF, when the buzz comes, it comes very fast and can sometimes hit very hard. Then it seems to fade away with the same intensity. With the Zag, it was a far more subtle experience for me. The buzz seemed to kind of float down onto me, then lingered for quite a while. It was not as intense as with Nak or Tangiers, but was more enjoyable. I'd say it was comparable to having a few drinks and getting buzzed vs. slamming several shots and getting smashed.

Anyway, like someone said before, as enjoyable as I thought this was I could not smoke this every day. But I was glad I got the oppurtunity to learn how to smoke Zag first had from people who really know their ish.

use foil so that way you can take full hits, then tell me the buzz isn't intense ... smile.gif

And if you mix it with regular nak or whatever else you wanna mix it with, I have not noticed any ghosting issues in any of my hoses.

Will give that a try. I was told that if you smoke just straight Zag with foil you have to use like 4-5 coals. Any experience with this?
