SilentBob
Just got my first phunnel earlier this week and have tried different heat management techniques and hole patterns but still having issues with burning/harshness. I'm using a 29" 3-hose with 2 hoses plugged (until I can afford my KM!), 2 or 3 Golden QL's, and have some Nahkla Orange, Laya Vanilla, Al-Waha Peach, and have had issues with burning on all. Good flavor for about 5 mins then burning/harshness
ryno
Are these the 40mm coals? If so, try breaking them into halves and using either 2 or 3 halves.
Bulldog_916
You are using way too much coal. 1.5 QLs is the maximum. Split the coals in half and put three halves in a triangle on the bowl. You should be good after that.

boulderkid303
Dont use a phunnel for that type of baccy. Tangiers only in phunnels. All others is really a waste. Plus nakhla likes it more out of as regular head.

ambuletzd2h
when i use qls on a phunnel i only put one on at a time and it seems to work out perfect
mushrat
damn..2-3 whole ql's...no wonder. Try the 3 halves or even 1 coal in quarters. Also, a little realized fact is that real phunnels can get superheated. That's to say thebowl itself retains heat so well it will get so hot it will cook the shisha without ANY coals. I have to watch this at the bar when peopel have been smokign tangiers for a while. No matter now little coal you put on when the bowl has reached this point it will burn. Try touching about 2/3 of the way down the phunnel. If its real hot, then remove the coal for a few minutes and let the thing cool down. And you can smoke ANYTHING out of a phunnel in my experience. SilentBob
sorry i meant to write i use 2-3 HALVES of the Golden QL's at a time, usually even spaced around the phunnel. guess it's just turning and flipping management i gotta get down for the phunnel. and mushrat: i bought the chinese small phunnel from HC, will it still tend to cook the tobacco? I wouldn't bet on it. You shoudl probably mention if you have a chinese phunnel when askign advice because it will work differently than a real one and i wouldn't want you to get crappy advice. Rayneuki
All I can say is move your coals around until you find the sweet spot, then pop that wind cover on it. That works for my Tangiers Phunnel, not sure about the chinese.Oh, and if you're looking for a KM, HookahJohn has some in stock. ToncSTAR
when i use my phunnel i use 3 coals to start off. then when everythin gets going i use 2 with a ghetto DIY windcover i made out of a empty starbuzz can and my drill sessions last well over one hour before it anything starts to go south. Try smoking your favorite non tangiers shisha in a mod bowl, and the same exact shisha in a phunnel. Do it side by side. I guarantee that you will get better flavor out of the mod because you are pulling air straight through the flavor unlike the phunnel.Just because you can smoke a phunnel bowl of fakher w grape for 4 hours does NOT mean it is going to taste anywhere near as good as out of a mod bowl. You should be able to get the same "clouds" out of both bowls - just learn overall bowl loading and heat management. Don't micro manage - the size or pattern of your holes doesn't matter - just as long as you find the equilibrium of air flow.
